For us yes, not so much for the Tigers.

Haase is their #1 catcher, 4 years control, currently at league minimum, and produced a 1.3 WAR last season.

Not sure they would be convinced an unproven middle INF prospect plus assuming 1 year of Pomeranz at $10MM is all the enticing.

Given what they got in return for Soto … sounds more like they wanted to reduce some payroll.

Would not mind dealing for Haase … as the #2 catcher … he is good enough but not to be confused with a major upgrade from Nola. At 30, should be “slightly “ better defensively and offensively.

Should not require a major trade chip since in 2020 Cleveland traded him to DET for “Cash Considerations” … but he did improve his value with Detroit.

Question of the Padres is he better as the #2 catcher than Campusano or Severino … and if so by enough to justify the trade chip sent to DET?

See more a Castillo or Cosgrove to DET base for Haase. Just don’t see dumping any salary in the process to DET.

AJ Pollack to Mariners 1/$7..

💯 not worth -10 spots in draft.. and roughly $12 million (with penalties)

Cueto maybe only one that is..and not so sure anymore

Find the timeline pretty interesting

Pollock spotted at local eatery near Petco a few days ago.. "Padres are a fit" was ease dropped

Engel signs a couple days later

AJ Pollock signs with Mariners next day

Winder if we offered something like 1/4 + incentives of $2-$3.. to try and stay under 273.. and Seattle just offered the full $7 guaranteed and we went the faster/better D less bat route ..(and most importantly) cheaper option. .???

Preller might have been close to what Seattle signed him for given the deal appears to be in doubt down to the end … maybe the agent was trying to get more and would not commit … Preller bails to Engel before Engel is signed elsewhere …. Pollack signs with Seattle since that is the last team interested.

With penalties, that is way too much to commit to what should be “insurance” over the season … maybe part-time. AT 35+/- he is not the Pollack of old plus the core of the offense is already potent so Engel is a good fit. Did not see what Engel signed for.

Preller may be at the point where he needs to keep his powder dry to use during the season (trade deadline) if a major hole opens be it SP / C / OF. Only about $6MM under the next threshold and may only want to breach that of a very specific major upgrade … not an “insurance” policy. Also, don’t know what he thinks of Teheran’s chances for 2023 since Teheran carries about $6MM if he makes the roster … and SP may be a much bigger issue that a back-up OF.

So with a full 40..and assuming no ST surprises or further moves (I doubt that with AJP) our 13 for opening day

1. Manny 3B

2. Soto LF

3. Xander SS

4. Crone Zone  1B/2B

5. Carpenter DH/1B/OF

6. Kim 2B/3B/SS

7. Grish CF

8. Nola C

9. Azocar CF/OF

10. Engel CF/OF

11. Campy C/DH/1B

12. Dixon 1B/3B/OF/DH

13. *Batten Utility

*Rosario is > but he benefits > by playing everyday at AAA vs riding a bench that won't give him much playing time..

RF/DH (and 1B vs very though RHSP).. 1st 20 games will be a mix of Carpemter/Azocar/Engel/Dixon and Campy*

* if the idea is to DH Campy a lot (5 games + ) 1st 20 games then Severino (3 C) makes some sense vs Batten

Tim Lopez (minor league deal signing earlier) if we don't add... could easily displace Batten from #13... He has some mlb experience and track record that suggests he can..

Bench 10-13 feels light but 20 days in Fernando comes in and bumps all down a spot..and like I said don't think AJP is done... in my opinion we need a BAT that can put the ball in the stands with one swing in that Bench... (Dixon did that at AA/AAA last season..ST will show us if he can translate some of that into 2023) would feel better with a Voit though

Deal could be 1/$10 if $3 mil in incentives are met . Seems like a lot for Pollock.

Sounds pretty close but agree that at least one non-roster player gets added. Of the current Padres non-roster options they probably will take a long look at Schrock as a LHH INF over Batten if they go with Engel / Azocar as the 3rd OF until Tatis returns or LHH Dahl as the LHH if shows well enough to be the RF pre-Tatis. Both put a LHH in the mix.

Since almost zero chance Poppen makes the 26 man … will be DFA (no options) opening one roster slot at the end of ST. Add two is a bit more strategic since they will need to open another when Tatis returns on the 20th. Still a good chance two of Lopez, Crismatt, Honeywell are DFA with no minor league options.. Batten may just be low hanging fruit if they add Schrock and Batten gets DFA when needed.

For all the non-roster invitees and the bench incumbents, ST will be critical but a legit opportunity to get added. At various levels Azocar, Dixon, Batten are at risk (Engel and Carpenter are locks).

40 man roster space will not be a problem … so Severino, Schrock(L), Dahl (L), and even Teheran are really in play. Especially if ST injuries hit.

I will keep an eye out on Schrock over Batten … neither are starter types just fringe bench but as a LHH Schrock who has in the minors played INF and OF may provide a better (no worse) bench role than RHH Batten.

If the roster slots open as speculated out of the pitchers that don’t make the active roster , Batten can be options for emergencies.
