2023 offseason

Bauer has been released by LAD

Eats another 40 man slot (now full) … so on the verge of some DFA action if other FA signings.

Makes me think … along with the Honeywell signing … that the speculated signings of Pollack and Cueto are less likely … but still possible.

I like Engle … but no offense and just one year control … so he is likely more in competition with Azocar for the back-up CF slot and RF until Tatis returns. However, they did need another RHH and another OF … so he may be bumping Dixon or Batten and actually get some RHH DH.

Did not see the contract but expect a very low salary and with Honeywell still below the next tax level..

Can't hit them out to Center with this vacuum cleaner

I still see some kind of 2 or 3 for one deal or maybe 1 on 1 DFA type deals... Rosario/Sullivan/Batten/Poppen/Cristmatt/Pomz and maybe Garcia/Morejon could be moved /some DFAd... I am almost certain AJP will be looking for $$$International money... and comp pick if he can get them..or lower mid level specs .. only a few here would be part of a major deal for MLB ready/proven types

We maybe at 40 but knowing AJP 5-10 of these 40 won’t be on the 40 man roster by opening day and another 5-10 will be

Speculation to fill the void …

With the signing of Engel who is a veteran duplicate of Azocar … have to wonder the future of Azocar. Doubt the Padres keep both as the #4 and #5 OF since both provide minimal offense, both RHH, both with plus defense (Engle slightly better), and Engel with better base running skills. Neither one is going to unseat Grisham in CF as the starter. Probably don’t want either to be a long term starter IF one of Soto-Grisham-Tatis end up on a longer term IL.

1. Azocar has minor league options, so the easiest move is to send him to AAA … and that would preserve his 6 years control.

2. Trade Azocar (maybe as a part of a bigger deal) … the league is short of legit CF and at league minimum with 6 years control and in 218 AB in 2022 he had a slash line at 257/298/332 … would have value to a team desperate for a CF.

Azocar by himself would not get any real ML help but wonder if he could be leveraged into some team taking Pomeranz’ contract … no real player return but open some payroll space for a more critical FA signing? Or are Azocar / Pomeranz more valuable to the Padres than any FA the actually could sign?

Speculation 2

With the signing of Honeywell … a real long shot given health, limited recent work, and other roster competition … likely they have to DFA him and hope he goes through waivers and get sent to AAA.

However sometimes long shots do come in … and he was pitching healthy in winter ball and was at one time a Top 100 prospect with plus stuff. IF he had a lights out ST … who gets bumped off the 13 man staff? Made all the more interesting if Lopez (as a Rule 5) is lights out and the Padres want to keep him. Might end up with some deals near the end of ST (unless injuries open up slots).

Look for arb BP arms next week Castillo and Co.. as possible trade chips

Agree but just a matter of timing.

First Padres priority for RP on the final 13 active and insurance in AAA to be the best for the season. With ongoing injury concerns surrounding Pomeranz, Castillo, Baez, and Honeywell … might be careful in dealing out of the pen options until they see what they have health-wise in ST.

My guess is that Pomeranz would be the first they would like to deal (injury risk, cost, one year control) and need ST to market him as healthy. If successful … and Lopez wins a spot that is one scenario (but never to rely on a Rule 5 guy until you see him). So, Castillo / Cosgrove are the next up for that 3rd LHRP (assuming Morejon is in AAA being groomed for a SP role).

So timing (and return) has to be balanced. Plus expect that a demand for RP will still be there in ST.

The knack on Azocar was that his baseball IQ seemed tracking his abundant skills and he tended to not be focused at times... this tells me quite the opposite..dude is as elite with the glove as they come... Soto pretty decent to my surprise (mid)
