Keeping 2023 championship odds interesting and potentially impacting Machado’s opt out is the fascinating saga of Correa.
Beginning to sound that the METS are not happy with the negotiations with Boras (METS want some clear opt out if Correa is injured). Boras apparently is revisiting a deal with MINN … and maybe other clubs. Since both SF and the METS who really wanted him have found enough medical reasons to pull away … have to think serious.
IF the Mets don’t sign him … they become a less of a challenger vs the Padres for the NL championship. If he ends up in MINN just better for the Padres in the NL race.
However after the season, NYM could be a legit bidder for Machado and with Devers off the market that could really push Machado’s price tag up up up. Not good.

I wonder what kind of contract Correa will get … thinking the long term deal is at risk and maybe a shorter deal with a higher AAV.
Guessing the Preller made a call to Boras just to ’check-in” if a super deal might fall in their lap. Add Correa to the current INF/DH rotation and that would really be special or make a current player a trade chip (e.g. Kim). I give that scenario virtually no chance … but I am saying there is a chance.

Rosario literally had his best season ever in minors and got a little cup of Joe.. his trade value is as high as its going to get..and he is considered a 50 spec.. not sure what he can do to increase his 'current" value...
Wethers is working out like a madman this offseason and his stuff is very similar to Lauers.. he just needs to throw strikes with his secondary stuff.. or be move to the BP where he cab be elite... He still super young.. But yes I agree his value is down atm...
I think Rosario + Henry Williams and Iriarte gets us Lauer and with the adds in Mil and arb for Corbin and Woodruff as well as others incoming ..Lauer is 80% likely to move
He can produce at the major league level when given the opportunity.

Everyone agrees we need pitching so you want to trade a young controllable pitcher for a “Guy”
Don’t trade any pitching just to make a trade….that’s just stupid

Rumor is that the Padres have made their “final offer” to Cueto and is just waiting for Cueto to choose between SD and MIA.
If he choose SD … that is the simple solution to that extra SP.
SD starting 6: Darvish; Musgrove; Snell; Cueto; Martinez; Lugo … to start the season.
That puts Morejon on the bubble …either to the pen (bumping someone else), trade chip, or optioned to the minors to get stretched out as a SP to compete in 2024 with the potentail of a number of Padre FA SP.
Padres still really like Morejon‘s upside so stretching him out in AAA may make the most sense … plus would add a year of control.
EP starters could be: Morejon; Groome; Knehr; Avila; Baez; Weathers: Teheran; Font; and a couple of others … some probably start in SA. A quality 2024 in the minors for a group of them will give the Padres more insurance for a late season call-up (for injuries) or 2024 to allow for not re-signing some SP.

Per Passan: Padres signed Brent Honeywell to a split contract. Major league deal is 725k in the big leagues. 200k in the minors. Good low risk signing. Former Rays prospect

Honeywell has just never been able to stay healthy. He was dominant in the Dominican this winter. He put up a 0.96 ERA in 28 innings.

Worth a shot at only 27 … at least a chance of health and was a major prospect with TB early in his career.
Surprised it was a ML contract eating up a 40 man roster slot but maybe that was the piece that got him to sign. Puts some of the current 39 (not counting Tatis) at heightened risk if any other adds.
Was primarily a SP before but wonder given his injures the start him out in the pen? A lot of pitchers in the mix for the Padres and EP.

Dude.. he is a terrific CF.. could a Grish deal be coming?
In a perfect world he is a platoon insurance piece at CF..1015 HR pop.. had a terrific season a fee ago and has some speed and + defense.. interesting signing
