2023 offseason

PreviousPage 294 of 376Next

Saddened by the passing of the great Nate Colbert.  He was my first Padres hero and someone I had the pleasure meeting later in life as a Padres representative at one of their events.  Back injuries shortened his career but he was so good in those early days of the Padres franchise.  Wonderful player and wonderful person.  RIP Nate!

I cant believe that I am typing this; especially since I have ignored the suggestion when Henry has suggested this, but should SD look into a trade with MIL for Lauer?

Maybe instead of signing Cueto? Lauer is projected by MLBTR to make about $5.2M in arbitration this season, compared to the $9M+ for Cueto.

With their signing of Miley, and the add of Wilson as well, they have a surplus of SPs. MIL is always a little budget conscious, so saving some money should appeal to them. And its reasonable to consider them a legit contender for the NL Central or for a WC spot, so it would need to benefit both teams.

Would Weathers and Rosario for Lauer be fair for both teams, or would SD need to include a better prospect?

RIP Nate Colbert!  He still is the current all-time leader in home runs for the team.  Just think of how many he would have had if he had not had to play with the original dimensions of the old Jack Murphy Stadium and not have battled back problems throughout his career.  Also recall that doubleheader day in Atlanta on August 1, 1972 when he had 5 home runs and drove in 13 runs!

Nate still ranks among my all-time favorite Padre players, which includes Mr. Padre (Gwynn), Winfield, Ozzie, Hoffy, Randy Jones, the Crime Dog, Sheff, Cammy, Finley, Gonzo, Nevin, Gaylord Perry, Peavy and current Pads Manny, Nando, Soto, Croney, Xans, Yu and Musgrove.

Here are the 20 all-time Padres home run leaders:

  1. Nate Colbert with 163.
  2. Adrian Gonzalez with 161.
  3. Phil Nevin with 156.
  4. Dave Winfield with 154.
  5. Tony Gwynn with 135.
  6. Wil Myers with 134.
  7. Ryne Klesko with 133.
  8. Ken Caminiti with 121.
  9. Manny Machado with 108.
  10. Hunter Renfroe with 89.
  11. Chase Headley with 87.
  12. Benito Santiago with 85.
  13. Fred McGriff with 84.
  14. Kahil Greene with 84.  (tied for 13th, but the numbered list autocorrect won't let me list it that way)
  15. Brian Giles with 83.  (should be 14th)
  16. Steve Finley with 82.  (should be tied for 15th)
  17. Carmelo Martinez with 82.  (should be tied for 15th)
  18. Fernando Tatis, Jr. with 81.  (should be 16th)
  19. Will Venable with 81.  (should be tied for 16th)
  20. Greg Vaughn with 78.  (should be 17th)

With average seasons for them, Manny should move to #5 on this list next season and Nando should move into the to #10, possibly #9.  This has been a fun trip down memory lane.  Go Pads!

Not even close from MILW perspective. Lauer has two years control and expected $5.5 in arb this year is a huge bargain for a 27 year old who over the past two years and an ERA in the mid-30s while pitching in MILW (and the NL Central).

For Lauer, MILW still a contender for the NL Central would demand a return that impacts 2023 in a position of need.

Side: the trade value of Rosario and Weathers is minimal … Weathers has not performed well since that 1/2 in 2021 and Rosario really did not excel in AAA when he was away from EL Paso. Legit question on both even being more than a bench or fringe ML player in the future. Seem, now, to be more throw in pieces with a much stronger lead piece in any deal. To get them back to any real trade value … they need to be kept and perform in 2023.

Still hope for Rosario and Weathers.

Can’t trade them now while value so low.

We really need Weathers in the rotation for years to come…have to at least find out if that’s a possibility.

Rosario literally had his best season ever in minors and got a little cup of Joe.. his trade value is as high as its going to get..and he is considered a 50 spec.. not sure what he can do to increase his 'current" value...

Wethers is working out like a madman this offseason and his stuff is very similar to Lauers.. he just needs to throw strikes with his secondary stuff.. or be move to the BP where he cab be elite... He still super young.. But yes I agree his value is down atm...

I think Rosario + Henry Williams and Iriarte gets us Lauer and with the adds in Mil and arb for Corbin and Woodruff  as well as others incoming ..Lauer is 80% likely to move

With that said I'd take Cueto for free..keep the specs..and move Garcia $3.5 who can Close (Twns) for Keppler +$$ to cover the difference for 2023 CBT

Atm with the arms we have CRISTMATTs ability to go 2 or 3 IP maybe of > vs 7th inning Garcia (who Pomz/or Wilson can replace)

They should let him at least DH in Winter League.. to get his timing back

If he is getting DFA from the Tigers, probably not worth the gamble.
