2023 offseason
Quote from dusty on October 13, 2022, 5:24 pmIs anyone not ok with resigning Wil for first base/DH and doing what they kind of did this season with flexibility and add a bench bat that can provide added flexibility? Resign Profar just add another year or two. Then you keep the core together (minus Bell and Drury but add Tatis back). Once Tatis comes back you have a core and consistent lineup (barring injuries) of Profar, Soto, Machado, Tatis, Crone, Myers, Kim, Grisham, Nola. Stick with basically the same playoff lineup and let it ride. Resign Suarez and Martinez. Personally, I think Melvin’s continued trust in the roster especially around guys like Grisham Hader and Nola really have helped to give them that renewed confidence early on.
I think for moves… agree with a solid starter as priority possible Syndergaard, Heaney, Anderson??? Was really hoping Clevinger would be the guy but he ended up being a disaster thanks to that last injury. But moving forward, go after one of the Dodgers’ turn around pitchers or Thor might be the move. Also See if you can’t sign a bounce back veteran pitcher on the cheap to compete such as Manaea (dude’s career numbers is one full run per game better and is a team first player) or Severino or Wacha? Only thing I don’t like about Wacha is that he may be more expensive after the season he had.
And Offensively Sign a bench option with pop.
So really could see us retaining mostly the same roster but add Tatis and bench player and one or two starters.
How I would adjust roster:
Adds
Tatis (from injury)
Thor
Voit
Groome
Pomeranz
Castillo
Keep
Myers
Profar
Suarez
Martinez
Drop
Manaea (option 2 from Groome possible minors deal with opt out and incentive based deal)
Alfaro (tough to lose two solid teammates)
Stammen
Clevinger
Bell
Drury
Personally, I like that team a little better except we will obviously need another addition until Tatis comes back. I wouldn’t rule out a Haniger or a Mancini addition - someone who is solid who won’t break the bank or an under the radar trade.

Quote from fenn68 on October 13, 2022, 5:55 pmI would be fine with the return of Myers (I like him on the team and is a fun watch) … just a matter of price.
As for the potential adds of Voit and Syndergaard … nope. Voit just does not provide enough for his salary and basically is a DH only and Melvin seems to favor plus defensive options. Not been good in WASH. Stick with Myers at 1B and Tatis to LF and have Profar the guy who moves around to facilitate a rotation DH. Low cost veteran FA to fill the bench roles as needed.
Watched Syndergaard pitch late in the season … seems to have lost a lot with his stuff … still probably a higher cost gamble at this point. Agree to move on from Clevinger and Manaea. However, pitching is where I would spend the most for another reliable SP … so if the scouting is right … Senga from Japan is an option. Maybe bigger with Bassett with strong ties to Melvin from OAK time. Guessing Rodon is way out of the price range.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 13, 2022, 8:32 pmEl Gallo on 3/30 or less type deal I can deal with... slightly more than Profars deal with GG defense at 1B ..and hoping for that 20/20..30/30 Wil (except 2B/HRs..vs SB as I think his bad wheel has slowed him down sone).. 2
.265/.330/.440 Wil would be fine 6th/7th in the order... Dixon (if we think as Padres production..not overall) could probably be = or > Drury/Bell.. as DH/1B/3B/RF type guy.. with Tatis/Profar/Grish/Kim .. in some sort of LF/SS/CF maybe DH movement.. 3 spots 4 bats... BMel can ride the hot bat at DH amongst the above and the rest of the bench.. a vet bat (Lowish cost short term deal)like Peralta or a slightly more pricey lefty power bat like Joc could also be brought in.. But yeah a cheapish Wil would allow us to sign a legit top 2-3 type SP to be our 4th (Senga?) And a SP depth piece like Davies 5th/6th allowing us to give starts to Groome as well

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 14, 2022, 10:34 amCorrea opting out ..just makes our chances of landing a FA at a different position and cheaper > more studs at SS that are available for teams to shoot $30-$35 mil per at ..Turner/Xander/Darnsby/Correa the better..less money the Big spenders will have for others... same with aging P like DeGroom and Kershaw taking $35-$40+ million per to sign.. allowing guys like Senga to slot right in at $15ish to SDP

Don't think we extend that to any of our FA

After 2nd thought .. we might Bell.. for some reason my resigning priorities are Wil and Drury. BUT Bell seems like the one QO I don't know why that is..but the lack of 1B and the probability of Wil wanting a 1 yr deal in Colorado or Cincy to build value ..maybe even Drury lends me back to Bell being that QO guy

That QO level might make a number of GMs be cautions of extending an offer on some on the edge.
Bell is not going to get a $19.65MM AAV as a DH (or bad 1B) even with his hitting history and only 30 years old. His internal debate may be what his agent thinks he can get as a FA while saddled with a QO penalty for the signing team … being a DH and then the odds of securing a multi-year deal (and how long a deal). Push that calculus against the $19.5MM for one year and going back out on the FA market at age 31 but without a QO draft pick penalty attached. Given his sub-par effort since the trade … may need (want) to rebuild value.
Have to also consider the 4 SS, Judge, Nimmo, Rodon, Diaz, DeGrom as FA rated well ahead of him sucking up the big money. He may just want to shift his FA to 2024.
On the other hand, Scott Boras is his agent who “normally” takes his guys to FA.
As a FA in 2023 … maybe something less than $15MM (maybe $13MMish) on a 2 year deal with an option. Just a DH coming off a mediocre season capped by a poor finish. If Boras sees something like that … that take the QO and hit FA in 2024 and over the two seasons make more than a 2023 FA contract.
Side: would not be surprised if Preller - Boras got together on a multi-year deal sooner than later … $45MM/3 years.

With the lack of LHB in our team is also why I saw this.. Bell, Grisham, Crone, Profar and Soto maybe the players that benefit the most from the new shift rules as well.. Soto has been "shifted" at least -10 hits since coming to SD and at least 4 so far in post season...our P going to have to pound the outside vs LHB and inside to RHB to get them to ground out the more traditional way...
