It Appears AJ Pollock could be a Padre soon

Says who? I guess we can use him as long as he is cheap and the Padres coaches/staff think he still has something left.

Not reading too much into it..but he was spotted by a friend of mine at a restaurant close to Petco with a dude (his agent) discussing playing for the Padres.. my buddy was 2 tables over and heard Padres are a good fit..

Being reported by MLB.com that we're in a battle with the Marlins and Reds for Cueto.  If that's true, then we must really be low-balling Cueto because why would he sign with the other two teams except for a big gap in salary offers.  Hopefully, he wants to go out as a winner and picks the Padres instead of playing with a bottom dwelling team.

MIA? I thought MIA had “extra” SP that were available for trades …

Pollack, IF HEALTHY, would be that good 4th OF as a RHH who can play all three OF slots and DH partner with LHH Carpenter during the season. Play OF until Tatis returns. Past this prime but still could be better than Azocar who would drop to the 5th OF.

I still feel like any further free agent pickups could be contingent on moving Pomeranz. I like Cueto and Pollock both, but I don't know that anyone left on the market is worth paying the penalties and losing draft position at this point.

Guessing maybe they have deals on the table to trade “two” of their young starters and want a 1-2 year stop gap till Perez,Eder and Fulton are ready.

They could trade both Lopez and Luzardo and still have Alcantara,Cabrera,Cueto,Rogers,& Garrett with Meyer,Perez,Eder,& Fulton all about ready.

Crazy

Always tricky to sequence FA signings with trades … but possible.

Just a speculation string: Padres sign Pollack (RF) … insert Tatis in CF … trade Grisham + to Miami for a SP in conjunction with Miami signing Cueto.

If the assumption for the Padres either Luzardo or Lopez is greater than Cueto in both performance and control … and Grisham can be covered by the OF alignment shift with the addition of Pollock … might work with the money worked to be worked out.

Would love to move Pomeranz (and his contract) but hard to see MIA doing that without getting some additional prospects in return. Plus sort of depends on Lopez vs Luzardo as to sizing the return.

Not out of the question.

Probably not a one for one … but a baseline could be:

Grisham to MIA … legit CF with power … $2.6MM in arb plus two more years of control … position they want to fill

Luzardo to SD … legit SP … $2.0MM in arb plus three more years of control … position Padres want to fill now and long term.

Now most would say despite similar WAR in 2022 the upside of Luzardo is greater than Grisham along with having the extra control year. So, likely Padres would have to upgrade what they give to MIA (probably low cost prospects).

To try to move Pomeranz ($10MM in 2023 and still unknown injury recovery) to open up some payroll space to accommodate Pollack might shift for Luzardo to Lopez ($5.5MM with only one more year of control) would probably require a different set of prospects in the deal from the Padres.

Still, not out of the question.
