I have my doubts on trading for Devers or Othani at the deadline … assuming either are put on the market.
First, how much in terms of prospects … considering there will competition for their services … will be needed to swing the trade for two months of play?
Both will go to FA if they are that close to FA … so no advantage on a future signing … plus since traded mid-season can’t offer a QO (and get prospects).
Add that Othani’s cost at $30MM the 1/3rd salary moves to the Padres and basically that is plus $17-18MM including penalty for two months.
Second, a pretty large gamble that either of these “super stars” will play up to their histories … as they transition teams / leagues in that two month period. We saw that Soto / Bell under performed last season in that window and did not get the Padres even into the WS.
I am hoping the current starting roster is good enough win it all with just “minor” tinkering. Keep the assets to address the 2024 issues.

OK, I am going to stir the pot again. Knowing two things, one we need some inexpensive, controllable SP, and two, I know most of you dont want to trade Kim or Grisham.
So 4 trades to make you all upset and unhappy. 😉
Trade #1 - SD gets Elder, Shoemaker, and Conley from ATL. ATL gets Kim. Elder is ML ready and under control until 2028.
Trade #2 - SD gets Seth Brown. OAK gets Zavala, Kerr, and Waldron. Brown is under control until 2026.
Trade #3 - SD gets Luzardo. MIA gets Grisham, Crismatt, Groome, and Williams. Luzardo is under control until 2026.
Trade #4 - SD gets Taylor. KC gets Rosario.
Brown plays 1B, Crone stays at 2B, Carpenter/Azocar cover LF until the return of Tatis. Then the OF alignment switches to Soto in LF, Taylor in CF, and Tatis in RF. After Tatis return, batting order goes,
Tatis, Carpenter - DH, Machado, Soto, Bogaerts, Brown, Nola, Crone, Taylor.
Rotation of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Luzardo, Elder, Martinez/Lugo battle out for #6 in ST, loser goes to the bull pen.
SD saves about $6M± available to deploy towards deadline deals.

Dominic Smith signs with Nats for $2M, and another $2M in possible bonuses. Apparently Preller wasnt as infatuated with Smith as some of us here.
Good signing, and rather inexpensive.

Just from a $$ perspective..perhaps Voit/Manzini/Duvall/Peralta/types are coming down to such deals 1/3 + 3 bonuses... 1/2 + 2 bonuses...
Don't think Profar is there yet.. but he is getting very little traction and 3/24 might be a pipe dream for him.. could Cueto 3/24 with penalties around $12 mil this yr.. get ot done?

I am thinking 1/12.. BUT the way AJP can work the CBT a bit 3/24... it's sort of an 8 mil gamble on 2024.. we get 2 yrs of good Cueto and maybe 3rd or .maybe we just cut him and eat the $8... no different than 1/12 with 1/12 option.. but spread over 3
