2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on December 31, 2022, 12:28 pmI am more concerned about the volume of players that (at his point) will have to be replace (or re-signed) for 2024 …
FA: Darvish; Snell; Hader; Pomeranz; Garcia; then if good as a SP player options declined by Martinez and Lugo. Even on the fringe Teheran will be a FA.
Then Manny can opt out and Carpenter is on a player’s option.
It is going to take a lot of money to address those holes with equal talent then add in the ARB increased for Soto, Grisham, Cronenworth, Nola. Not really getting any impact help in 2024 from the minors (except maybe RP).
Hard to make any move until they know where Machado stands ($30MM). Along with that, the chances of re-signing Darvish ($21.5 MM AAV) and/or Snell ($10MM AAV now). If Machado opts-out and signs with Miami and Darvish signs with the Cubs (his favorite city), and Snell signs with Seattle (going home) … Preller will have money to spend but a challenge if filling in all the holes with equivalent talent.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 31, 2022, 12:30 pmOnly way Padres possibly could get Ohtani is by free agency and Angels won't let that happen, probably trading him at the deadline or even before if they fall out of contention early. Agree with Fenn that Dodgers and Mets are the frontrunners and if either trades for him at the deadline and then gets him to sign an extension, that will make it all the tougher for the Padres to win a World Series. Hoping that he goes to the Yankees or Red Sox, which at least gives us a better chance for the NL pennant../;
Even if he does hit free agency, unlikely the Padres can be competitive with the salary Ohtani will demand. Forget about it and concentrate on players who may be the in the next generation of stars to balance out the roster. We'll learn a lot about what Seidler and Preller intend to do toward competing in 2024 and beyond in the next few months.

If LAD signs Othani they would lose Urias or Kershaw or both.. they haven't shown the deep deep pockets to go over $300 mil yet..neither have the NYY for that matter.. not sure LAD goes 10/$500 where I think Othani settles at.. only Mets maybe Siedler would go that route..maybe Boston of they let Devers go...Which opens an option if Manny leaves.. but I am 💯. Manny will be a non issue Padres for life before April 1st..
HONESTLY I wouldn't put it past Siedler if he an AJP have discussed adding Othani at $50mil per even if it cost him $95 mil to do so (tax and all)per... not sure many would match 10/$500 to be honest.. Mets might ..but maybe Othani feels at home in Anaheim and sees the 45min drive to SD as a win win for him..
We got ro stop thinking rational because when it comes to the best players in the game Neither AJP nor Siedler have shown any rationality (when it comes to $$ fiscal responsibilities)..offered or discussed $400mil with Judge..Offer Trea more than Philly and Abreu more than Astros.. gave Xander 11/$280.. They see quality and go after it.. positions be damned ... and if Siedler says their intentions are to keep this going and Soto being here long term with the rest of the gang ..I have no reason to doubt him or not take him at his word... 50 yrs of Padres penny pinching has made us all skeptics ...even the National Media has no clue how SDP are doing this ..lets just buy our merch..buy concessions and go to games ..I am 💯 sure if SD supports its team to 81 sell outs a yr.. Siedler will put even more effort and $$ on his team..
Go Padres!

Quote from dusty on December 31, 2022, 1:19 pmExactly. Going close to if not 40 mil per for Judge…the team has money to spend and are prepared to with or without Soto. We know their potential budget and we know the luxury tax thresholds will or should only rise in the future. I strongly believe they are going to move forward with a big 4 involving some combination of Xander Tatis Manny Soto and/or Ohtani. Snell Darvish Manny and Soto will all play major roles in determining what directions Preller and Seidler pivot. The goal is to continue to win without having major peaks and dips in future payrolls

Quote from fenn68 on December 31, 2022, 2:54 pmJust something to the Othani discussion ... his contract has a no-trade clause to every team EXCEPT the METS. Ohtani apparently does not want to be moved for 2 months when he knows he is going to FA over the winter.
Should take note the only exception is the METS ... a clue to the early favorite to sign him? Focusing on his preference ... and with the contract he will get any incremental money is less of a factor than playing where he wants to play. (See Judges and Abreu this winter).

Could that be because YU is in San Diego ? There seems to be a an unspoken Cultural respect or other factors in JPN players not wanting to play for Teams with other JPNs players.. I wonder if Othani still wants to go to the METS with Senga signing (after his deal by the way) so maybe is preferemce..maybe Not SD cause we had Yu.. ?? I am just happy he didn't pick LAD to be honest..

So to have a chance ... we let Yu go in FA?
I do see it as odd that with all the Padres' organization focus on the Pacific Rim with Japanese front office personnel and representatives in Japan ... none of the players coming over are signing with SD. (Yu was a trade).
Who (and when) was the last Japanese player coming to the states was signed by the Padres? Who (when) was the last FA Japanese player the Padres signed?

I believe the only Japanese player that we almost had first was Irabu, and he refused to sign, and we traded to the NYY.
Did we sign Akinori, or was that a trade with TEX?
And I think we have only traded for Japanese players after that. Maybe SD is too sleepy for them??

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 31, 2022, 4:56 pmIf we don’t extend Machado and let Yu go to free agency that saves us $51 mil.
Seems like just what it would take to add Ohtani in Free Agency which replaces Mannys bat “and” Yu’s arm.
But I agree he probably chooses NY,Chi,LA,Bos ahead of SD.

We could pivot to Urias and Devers at that point...Xander is Devers close friend and Urias would love to pitch closer to his Patria ....
