2023 offseason

Peralta still out there.. Voit + Petalta + Cueto .??

Voit and Peralta will come in cheap cheap too..

Anyone else noticed Braves got DFA White CF and one of the DFA NYY pitchers we've talked about... seems like they are filling their 23 to 26 spots with low cost DFA types..so our team may look thin to us..but perhaps our expectations are the 27 NYY atm.. lol

I think we are at the stage where the Padres hold out to sign a few more ML veterans to minor league contracts with invites to ST and see who survives to round out the bench.

Im thinking that is fine for C or INF. But Im really concerned about the start of the season, and the one COF spot until the return of Tatis. I would hate to see SD dig itself a hole in April, with a subpar performance in either LF or RF, and cost us a chance at the division. Plus, Tatis has yet to show us he can make it through an entire season, so I really think that we need a ML level 4th OFer.

Dont really want to rely on a bounce back candidate for 30-60 games in one of the COF spots.

I have been on the theme all winter ... however, at this point, not many reliable options remaining as FA and the better ones will be looking for teams where they have the best chance to play to earn their next contract.

At the stage of finding a "do no harm" candidate for that role given the options.

Grisham to Marlins is pretty intriguing.. he would be their HR leader at a prime position with GG Defense.. add a couple of BP arms as (with Segura signing) it appears Fish want to play with the big boys in 2023..and as long as they have that SP and a Super star IF in the making.. a few Segura/Grish type adds and they could be trouble in the EAST.. no one.. not Phillies /Mets or Braves can match their SP or their SP depth.. they do trail all in offense..and up the middle Defense..(Grish would get them closer with his "elite" D) bounce back seasons from Garcia and Soler and who knows..

Grish + Cristmatt + Moises Lugo for Rogers (or any really of their SP..(not Garrett..Groome (once an equal to Gore as a spec) could be > than Garrett now..(needs to loose a few pounds this offseason and would be another yr removed from surgery which combined should = back to elite spec stuff by ST)..

We should try to get Berti too.. seems like he is without a position in Miami and even as a super utility guy for us good get 400 PAs and 40 + SB adding a dimension we have little of

From Dennis Lin's latest on The Athletic on the possibility of trading Kim or Grisham.

Publicly, the Padres have downplayed the possibility. Speaking with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal last week, Preller acknowledged he had received inquiries on Grisham and Kim. “With the Bogaerts signing, our intention is to play this position group together,” Preller added. “We like the flexibility and the versatility it gives our team.”

Industry sources, however, have indicated that San Diego is open to discussing either player — Grisham, in particular. The Marlins, flush with starting pitching, are one team that could make sense as a trade partner; the Padres have expressed interest in right-hander Pablo López and possibly others in the Miami rotation.

"Industry sources" ... "open to discussing" is pretty vague since Preller is always "open to discussing" the entire roster. Plus watching Preller he will be working deals until opening day.

As for a deal with MIA ... now that they have signed Segura for 2 years (Jazz to SS) ... likely they would seek some ML offense if they moved a SP ... not sure the Padres can fill that need (others probably could). They do want a CF so Grisham makes some sense but that would require Tatis to CF and open a major hole in a corner while still seeking that back-up OF. Not seeing it as a match.

Maybe those comments were just out of date v current situation.

The only way I could see a trade of Grisham, would be to follow it up with another trade, and getting Michael A. Taylor from KC. With the balance of his suspension, and his health history, I dont think you want to count on Tatis being the main CF with a bat. Azocar would not get it done bat wise for a WS caliber team.

Just playing around with the baseline of a Lopez for Grisham deal.

Grisham ... 2.1 WAR in 2022 (in a very bad offensive season) .. 3 years control .. Arb estimate at $2.8MM

Lopez ... 2.8 WAR in 2022 ... 2 years control ... Arb estimated at $5.6MM ... ERA 3.75 / 180 innings.

Not all that far apart in value (always subject to specific team needs) with Grisham being cheaper and with the extra year of control. MIA has a deep SP group so has options. Not sure how the Padres could (would) backfill Grisham ... taking a starting OF out and having Tatis miss the first 20 games with no ML starting level OF on the roster (Azocar is a bench type).

Side note that Berti's name comes up but he is penciled in as the MIA LF/lead-off hitter ... and since they are looking to add offense not likely they move him.

The OF hole created by the trade of Grisham is probably worse for 2023 than what Lopez would add to the SP.

Which begs the question why MIA just does not trade for Taylor ... better hitter (recently) than Grisham and has the defense ... only 1 year control so should be available for "prospects" given KC is a clear non-contender.

SD gets Taylor from KC, and Berti and Luzardo from MIA. MIA gets Grisham, Lesko, and Zavala from SD. KC gets Rosario from SD.

ATL gets Kim and Nola. SD gets D'Arnaud and Anderson.

SD gets Berti for 2B, and lead off. Crone goes to 1B and we upgrade at C.

SD line up goes, Berti, Carpenter, Machado, Soto, Bogaerts, Tatis, Crone, D'Arnaud, Taylor. Bench of Gamel, Campusano, Azocar, Hernandez.

Rotation of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Luzardo, Anderson. And Martinez and Lugo battle it out in ST winner is #6 and loser goes to the pen.

Taylor's lack of power could be the reason he is not of interest to MIA.

With our line up, we could live with difference in power between Taylor and Grisham.

With the signing of Segura, I think Berti is available. MIA still has Soler, De La Cruz, and Bleday for LF. And Segura is capable of being a lead off guy, has done it in the past.
