2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 28, 2022, 1:52 pmI saw in a chat that MLBTR Anthony Franco seems to think the most likely traded MIA SP is Braxton Garrett. He is a LHSP that is controlled 2028. I propose this 3 team deal.
MIN gets Kim from SD. SD gets Garrett from MIA. MIA gets 4 MiLs from MIN all rankings are based on MLB.com. #7 Raya, #12 Martin, #20 Mercedes, and #30 Cavaco.
Like I said, the trade simulator says this is an even trade for all, I am thinking maybe its a little heavy for MIN depending on how good their system is or is not. But I think there is a base here. MIN gets its SS, SD gets its young controllable SP, and MIA gets some MiL for the future, because as it stands, they are not sniffing anything in the next two seasons.

So let me roll a question out there, especially with the Kluber signing in BOS. They are rumored to be listening on Sale. Would he be a good gamble for SD to take? He did not pitch much last season, I believe 5 innings due to non baseball/fluke injuries. He is coming off TJ surgery in March of 2020, so for the last couple of seasons, not a lot of wear and tear on that arm.
If he bounces back to his 2018 form, he is a top of the rotation arm. His 2019 was a mid rotation guy. He is controlled through 2024, and a vesting option for 2025 based on 2024 CY Young standings. He is making a big contract, $27.5M per season, and the option is for $20M.
Is BOS looking to shed some of the contract dollars, or are they thinking they are getting top of the rotation pitcher prospects back? Would you take him if BOS included all the money that we sent for Hosmer?? Which would basically make Sale a $14.5M per season pitcher?
I would definitely roll the dice and a genius way to recoup the Hosmer sunk cost.

Getting rid of thr Hosmer $$ will pay for only 1/2 of the tax penalty on the $27 mil for 2023. Although it could help stay under tier 2 in 2024..

Now I like Garrett but most have him a #4-5 type and maybe if everything comes together a #3. Good slider (and good secondary pitches) but a 90MPHish FB. Miami last season had him up and down to AAA, a couple of IL stints, used as a SP/RP and did not log that many innings. Certainly no one to rely on to help the 2023 Padres as a SP.
For that give up Kim who they have projected as a starter and who they would have to replace with equal productivity does not seem like a plan for a better 2023,

Anthony Franco
"My completely random guess is Braxton Gerritt."
I don't think it was a real guess, and I wouldn't want him anyway. A starter who put up a 1.2 WAR in 26 career starts versus a starting SS who put up 5.1 WAR this year? I don't see that helping the Padres. Cueto put up a 3.5 WAR in 24 starts this year and wouldn't cost us a starting position player.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 29, 2022, 12:59 amI'm not trading Kim for anybody, but I would love to have Garrett. A fully controllable young starter is exactly what this team needs. Having productive players on minimum deals makes it easier to keep the guys on big contracts around.

OK, lets modify it then,
SD gets Lopez from MIA. MIN gets Kim and Crismatt from SD. And MIA gets Lesko from SD, Rodriguez, Balazovic, and Comp balance pick from MIN.
SD then keeps Crone at 2B, and signs Voit to platoon with Carpenter at 1B.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 29, 2022, 8:12 amIf we are looking to round out the bench, I wonder if we should look at Adam Duvall. RHH power bat, plays good OF defense, and could handle 1B in a pinch if needed. Shouldnt be a high dollar amount, and would provide a good option for the 1 part of April while waiting for Tatis to come back, or a longer injury issue.
