2023 offseason

I am warming up to the Voit or Dominic Smith signing... both are LHB (I know Voit is RHP BUT his splits are very LHB like ..he owns righties and struggles vs lefties) and either a trade or Cueto signing.. or both...

After thinking about it, would much rather sign Smith over Voit. Voit is liability in the field and a strike out machine. Smith offers positional flexibility and the potential for better BA and OBP.

So if no trades, then sign Cueto, Hernandez, and Gamel, Smith. This should strengthen our rotation and bench, all four should be able to be added for about $20M. Cueto at $13M, Hernandez for $3M, and both Smith and Gamel for $3M each. $20M and another $15M in penalties I believe.

Pushing SD just over $300M for the start of the season.

Although upgrading C and maybe 1B/DH  would be a good thing … probably not the most critical targets given the limited trade chips.

Trade chips / money need to be focused on SP and a legit OF (preferablyRHH for DH/bench to complement LHH Carpenter).

I would stick with the FA path since the 40 man has little ML ready depth and trading for any decent add would just create a need somewhere else off the 26 man.

No idea on the money to sign them but either Cueto or Kluber seem the best options for SP and Profar or Anderson , or Pollack seem to be the best of the RHH OF options. The Padres are already considered one of the best rosters … so really need only to add good pieces … not shoot for the ceiling.

From P perspective

1. YU

2. Snell

3. JOE

4.Martinez

5. Lugo

6. MOREJON

7. HADER closer

8. Suarez set up

9. GARCIA

10. Pomz (if healthy trade candidate?)

11. Hill

12. Wilson

13. Lopez rule v..he needs to put up a good show in ST to stick

Is all set BUT obviously lots of people vying to move onto the top 13.. some movement yet at 4 through 6 (especially if we sign or trade for +1 SP) and who knows if we may need a start or 2 cover because of bumps and bruises to any of the top 3 early..

Cristmatt (out of options trade candidate?)/Cosgrove/Baez/Castillo/Poppen/Wethers/Kerr/Khner/Teheran (not on 40)/Mauricio Lugo (no 40)/Avila/Groome/Jacob (no 40) and others will make this a fun group to follow in ST.. as usual we could see some obscure guy (Azocar came out of nowhere last ST) pitch pr play great and make decisions more difficult or like the the Cantorini trade to Brewers from a yr ago (because Alfaro beat him out)..and we got Howell in that trade who could be a Dark Horse even bumping Azocar to AAA with his world class speed  much greater pop, and = or > defense not only in CF but SS as well.. a very interesting Swiss knife type with excellent skills that fit well into new rules changes.. stay tuned ST is around the corner and just typing this out got me going ..Trades/ST Battles and players rising to the occasion will make this Spring unique in its own right

and besides I want to see Griffin Doersching hit 2 or 3 500+ ft bombs in Peoria

How Melvin handles the pen could be interesting ... in order to keep the back end fresh and available for every game he could set up a dual approach

Set A: Hader (L) close, Garcia (R), Hill (L) going 7th through 9th

Set B: Suarez (R) close, Pomeranz (L), Wilson going 7th through 9th

Does not have to mean they alternate games nor does it preclude taking one out of one set and pitch with the other set if a  critical situations needs to be handed ... what it serves to do is keep all the arms in the pen fresher for the full 162 games and provides coverage for every game. None of the arms are normally going to pitch in 81 games.

If they go (as it appears now) with Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Martinez, Lugo, and Morejon as the 6 man rotation ... then, it is all about who wins the 13th slot ... Crismatt (out of options) has the inside track since he has ML experience in that kind of 5th-6th inning role if a starter falters and a multi-inning pitcher is needed.

However, if things go as normal at least one of the projected staff will be injured and on the IL, or at least one will be traded. If they trade for another SP, one of Martinez, Lugo, or Morejon gets the long relief slot (initially) and the three may shuttle between SP/long relief. That would shut down the need for the 13th man decision.

A perfect storm would be Teheran pitching like Teheran the 2x All Star.. good health and a Cueto signing

Then 1/Yu..2/Snell..3/Joe..4/Cueto..5/Teheran 6/Martinez

Lugo is BP.. pushes Morejon/Cristmatt likely out of 13.. unless we give up on Looez rule V.. either way between 40 man decision and adding 2 SP (Cueto AND Teheran) would lead to trade/s even if is for pieces down the road (if not pieces to strengthen the position player/s side of the 26.. can see Carantini type deals (if this were to happened but from the P side of things)...

Eovaldi to TEX … terms unknown

2 years / 34 million with a 3rd year vesting player option

Would a couple trades work here.. maybe the one to Minnesota/Miami

+ Arraez + Rogers

Followed by a Janson trade with Toronto

Since they have Kirk and now Varsho (who can at least be 3rd C insurance)

Would they take Campy as backup/DH on occasion + Cristmatt + Mauricio Lugo.they do need BP arms to give AJP more flex with 26 (as Cristmatt out of options) win/win..

Jansen is not getting moved. Varsho will not touch C for the Jays.

I like it... didn't want him.. With Astros /Mariners/Rangers (+Bochy) and LAA all improving this offseason we may see 2 or more different AL teams in the playoffs
