Virtually no chance Hosmer opts out of $39MM/3 years but a good chance Boston trades him (for peanuts basically) to make room for Casas as their future. With SD paying his contract above league minimum sort of a no risk move for some team.
That team will not be SD … remember Preller had been trying to trade him for a few years … not just a trade deadline situation. Also, not sure if his return would be a plus for the clubhouse - management relationship … could be adding a negative factor on how Hosmer feels now (and how is buddies feel …e.g. Machado).

Given the current mix of Catchers … I see Alfaro being the odd man out in 2023 unless they go with three catchers.
Alfaro lost playing time down the stretch … more than just due to injury but a very poor second half with a high K rate. Add in he only has one year control and will carry a $3-4MM salary when money could be deployed elsewhere.
Campy did well enough in his end of season showcase … especially working with Musgrove … is young, has 6 years of control, and at league minimum. A good fit for a #2 catcher behind Nola. Nola is around for 3-4 more years, that combo should give time for the prospects to develop.

While we disagree what path Hosmer will choose, those bridges have been burned that would have led to San Diego. To me, Hosmer's ego will overcome the logic that he likely will not get paid more than 13M by anyone for the next 3 years. I think he still looks back at his magical 2020 season and the times he has flashed top performances in spurts in 2021 that helped carry at team and believes in his own mind that he still has those glory days yet to come had he not been injured. He is still represented by Boras and Boras always tries to get his clients a better deal.
I'd be happy with Campy in San Diego but he's one of our few tradeable pieces that could get some value in return. Alfaro's departure would be another tough hit on team chemistry that will likely be hit by the loss of Manaea, Stammen, Myers and possibly Profar and Martinez. Don't know if I'd put him much above what he got paid this year unless there are some games played/performance incentives built in. Combined with Nola, it's a relatively inexpensive backstop duo and hopefully we'll get better results both offensively and defensively from the both of them.

No thanks to Hosmer.. But I'll take Casas.. maybe Swap Campusano + Rosario + BP arm for Casas.. Casas is a top 20 spec but a 1B/DH which is less valuable.. Campy (50ish) + Rosario (borderline 100ish) + one of our BP arms (Baez?) Should be about right for Casas
There is no way BOS is trading Casas, especially for the middle of the road prospects that you suggested. He is their #2 prospect and part of their future. You would have to start with Merrill to even open the discussion of getting Casas out of BOS.
Merrill about to move up to top 10 in baseball.. Casas about to drop to mid 20's.. Merrill to start convo?.. Dont think so.. Campy + is closer to = value.. and why we still talking Campy as mid? He obviously has a good bat.. and is a very good C (just ask Musgrove who was lost before Campy) maybe a top 5 framer in game just from small eye test.. If it was the other way around and we had Hosmer and Casas and an equally challenged roster as the Sox.. I would 💯 would want a Starting SS (Rosario) a Starting C/DH Campusano and a BP arm or 2 (Baez/Lugo/Castillo) for my 1B Casas...

Campusano is neither a good catcher or bat. His numbers are falling again at the plate, he has been trending down since his first 10 games back in SD. And if the put in the robot zones, no one will care about framing. You way overate Campusano. Most of baseball does not see a ML catcher or bat in Campusano.

He made the postseason roster.. as did former Padres C Mejia/Hedges/Carantini/Bethancourt and I know there is one or 2 more.. so perhaps baseball execs should pay attention to Padres C or ex C

He made the postseason roster, due to Alfaro not being 100%. Over the last 7 days he is hitting .091 BA, .091 OBP, and .091 SLG. That is not anywhere near ML quality.

I'm sorry, but this is a dumb argument. I for one have been encouraged by what I've seen from Campy since he came back up, but it's been less than 40 PAs. It's going to take a lot more than that for him to regain his top prospect status. It's also going to take a lot more than a bad 3 game stretch for the team to give up on him.

Bet it gets done ... Padres best pitcher now and will be 38 for the start of the extension. Darvish likes stability / routine so probably really would want to stay. He also keeps himself in shape and continues to work to improve ... so, a little less concern about age diminishing his performance at 38-39.
No idea on the terms that would work ... or if they go with a pure extension or a re-done contract that replaces 2023. Theoretically, if they override 2023 in the new contract ... could lower the CBT impact for 2023 which is at $21.5. I doubt he would sign lower than the $20MM due in 2023 but maybe if the added a 3 (or 4 year) extension giving him incentive to accept a lower AAV. Getting big money at 40 is a gamble ... so 4 years at $60MM (AAV $15MM) may be better than 2 years at a $40MM (AAV $20MM) ... can juggle the numbers but that would be the idea.
