2023 offseason
Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 20, 2022, 11:01 amAs things stand he probably starts out in LF before transitioning to a primary DH role. He'll probably get a decent amount of work at 1B against righties and can fill in at a few spots as needed. I like this signing a lot. He's probably not going to sustain the Bonds like pace he was on last year, but if he can hang around his career numbers he'll be a big bat with some defensive versatility for us.

Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2022, 11:14 am12:52pm: Carpenter’s $12MM is allocated in the form of a $3MM signing bonus and a $3.5MM salary for the upcoming season, tweets Rosenthal. The player option is valued at $5.5MM, and Carpenter will receive a $500K bonus for reaching each of 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 and 550 plate appearances in both seasons of the contract.
=================
From a CBT perspective the bonus is spread over the two years so the 2023 hit is $6MM (plus any incentive thresholds he achieves). Note he has not crossed 300 AB since 2019 ... so he would really have to be hot to hit that incentive level. At 37, probably a platoon player. Hopefully better than 2020-21 when he played very little with something close to a .600 OPS.
Like the signing ... but not the 9th regular hitter in my mind nor the corner OF support. He has only started 28 games in the OF in his career and 14 were last season with the NYY (they really some periods of OF problems).
NEXT: still need an OF.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 20, 2022, 12:24 pmAre we sure he plays the first 20 games in LF?
I'd rather have Azocar in LF w/Carpenter at DH.
Carpenter in LF could cost us a game or two.
I prefer the better defender

Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2022, 12:38 pmI still expect the Padres to add a legit OF … either via trade or FA. He will be the corner OF for the first 20 than migrate to DH (maybe as a platoon).
Pretty sure there are trade options that Preller sees that I don’t but Kepler has to be a target (legit defensive LHH OF … one year control so not too expensive … around $9MM). MINN is just loaded with OF after the Gallo signing. If Preller can be convincing and medicals look fine … maybe Pomeranz is part of the deal to balance out dollars.
Maybe a last minute FA sign could still be Profar (on a creative contract) as his market does not appear to be near his or Boras’ expectations and all three Preller and Profar and Boras seem to really like each other.
Others out there but think more to come

He definetely DH's a lot 1st 20... Dixon or Dahl would be > options defensive/offensive balanced in RF (or LF).. Azocar would give us a speedy option although little pop.. as a defensive COF with ok BA/OBP ..and speed (new rules make this valuable)

Still think Grossman or Duvall..Maybe Myers fit well with us... offer them something a little less or = to Carpenter and call it an offseason ..with DFA claims to +> depth or a BP arm or 2 + spec for a young controllable SP
Has to be someone willing to platoon/rotate in the OF vs someone looking for everyday ABs as after 4/20 Tatis/Grish/Soto.. will occupy the OF 💯 of the time if healthy
Why Duvall 1B exp and/or Myers might be the best options can DH/1B/COF 40 or so ABs per month.. 300 ish maybe more if injuries hit...
