Tatis is out for the first 20 games and has a clear track record of injuries … leg, back, shoulder, wrist covering almost every year starting in AA. So MAYBE the Padres get lucky but of all the regulars … odds favor Tatis being on the IL at least once for an extended period. That is where the most protection needs to be.

That sort of puts me in the Profar / Myers / Anderson / Gamel / Pollack camp as priority 1 … and avoid the 1B/DH slugs who likely will be still around in ST begging for a job. Price is always the key but the chance to play as a regular on a pennant contender has to appeal. Actually two of the five above would really work creating a super bench option when Tatis returns and bumps one (maybe into a platoon).

Barring any surprise add or delete … should be an interesting ST between Crismatt and Lopez … Poppen will be DFA. Crismatt will give that consistent arm that can come in early for a couple of innings while Lopez (if looking good) provides a piece to replace Hader / Pomeranz as they go FA after the season.

Both in ST and during the season, I would expect a liberal use of the IL for RP since most cannot be optioned (but might need a break) via a “minor” injury.

Such adds would lengthen our Bench and give us a bit better depth/Bench options through 162... 1st 20 days Grossman and the 1B/DH would almost be starters everyday until Fernando came back.. With Campy and Nola ..adding a GG x2 C should help both improve and gives us insurance in case of an injury.. insurance (Sullivan) we don't really have at the moment... Campy could DH and C 2 x a week.. Nola and Banhardt could split 50/50 the other days... keeping all 3 fresh and healthier ..

Paying 62% tax on Lugo... and by my calculations we still got close to $10 mil on the 2nd $20 mil (total $40 mil over with 1st $20 @ 50% tax.. 2nd $20 mil (of which we've used around $10 ) at 62%... dont expect Pads to go beyond that next $20mil treshold... so $10 mil for 1 or 2 bats? Or 1 P and 1 bat?.. 1/5 x 2

Severino should be a decent emergency call up in AAA with some ML experience but also familiar with the bench role.

Read this as a combo of a vote of confidence in Campusano being the #2 catcher and/or not being impressed by the remaining FA catchers (at what they may be demanding).

Also, Campusano’s calling card in his bat and the Padres need hitters … carrying a 3rd catcher does allow Campusano to DH more along with his C duties. Not as though the other bench options are elite hitters. Since he is a LHH and on the 40 man, Sullivan may get that 26 man roster slot and will have minor league option available. Severino would have to be added to the 40 man but would not have options and need to clear waivers if moved off the 26 man as I see it.

Preferable as a LHH but a decent RHH would work with the offense currently in place.

Still a chance of a trade (Kepler LHH from MINN) fits the LHH / plus defensive OF model and MINN has a glut of OF. Expensive and short control so probably not high cost in trade chips.

If a FA, and they focus on only one, maybe a $8MM max but likely the get a decent option for less. Gamel does fit that profile.

Once Tatis returns, keep Sullivan as the 3rd catcher and platoon Campusano / Gamel as the DH while Nola catches. OF bench of Azocar / Gamel … INF bench of Schrock … catching behind Nola of Campusano / Sullivan.
