Just for fun... Justin Turners 2nd half...
Remember DHing takes a certain mental adjustment (look at how terrible Bell was DHing vs playing 1B) and Turner DH in 1/2 of his games played in 2022.. Perhaps we can make it 2/3.. while he covers 3B 1x a week or so and maybe 1B every other week.. Ginger is a really solid Bat and likely won't cost more than 2/24 or 1/13

Quote from fenn68 on December 17, 2022, 7:28 amSort of that stage in FA to start questioning why the FA are still on the market … do 30 teams not like the FA at the price they are demanding … or do they just think they they can get what they need out of the masses that are left at a bargain? Are they seeing (worried) about injuries / health?
Except for Eovaldi and Swanson … all the upper quality FA have been swallowed up in the past two weeks and teams have chewed up the next level leaving a meager plate of leftovers. Not all that sure I care who (if anyone) the Padres sign at this point.
A few real veterans such as Kluber and Turner … close to their last hurrah after a lucrative career … might be holding out for a big contract and/or a very specific team(s). Padres may not be one of them. Would not be surprised once the dust settles Turner is a LAD.

Too expensive for someone the Padres don’t NEED. Luxury to this line-up.
Padres have eight position players who will play most of the time (like them or not).
Melvin likes to rotate through the DH the position starters for “rest” … so really don’t need (or want) a DH only type but for the 9th hitter someone who either plays the OF or INF to cover the “rest” periods.
Padres offense is potent before getting to the 9th hitter.
Option may be to “rotate” that 9th hitter among Campusano, Dahl (L), Azocar, and any other low cost add at that same time rotating the position players between the field and DH.
Do that for the first 4 months … see if it is working … then adjust at the trade deadline.

That and also teams against the 40 when an add needs a -1 and maybe they value the #40 guy on their roster = or slightly < at a minimum $$ amount vs 10 + mil...
Drury 2.6 WAR But -0.6 for his career prior to 2022 a prime example of a player who maybe asking too much based on a solid 2026 vs what he has historically made <$3mil per most seasons, including $750k in 2022... Profar may regret leaving $8 and then $10 option on the table at this point ..while he may get 3/36 (as a high) it will probably come on a team like Pitt of NYY dont step up..

Quote from fenn68 on December 17, 2022, 7:51 amSimilar theme on SP … top 4 is locked in the #5 and #6 go with maybe Teheran and Morejon with Crismatt as the long coverage (if needed). That deploys three on top of the main four SP and 6 man RP. See how that works for 4 months and adapt at the trade deadline.
Advantage with the SP is at least some AAA depth with Avila, Groome, Knehr, Weathers, and Baez if they return him to SP. Padres may sign another Teheran type for AAA.

Ideally I'd like to start the season with Groome or Avila at the #6 spot... let them show their stuff over 5-10 starts and maybe "find" 1/6 of the rotation for the next 5yrs.. unless they struggle mightily offcourse

Quote from fenn68 on December 17, 2022, 8:00 amI could see (if he is not getting a contract offer to his liking) Profar returning to the Padres on a “creative” contract with incentives / options … he loved playing here last season and the Padres loved him.
He fits that “super utility” profile that can cover a lot of positions, runs the bases, hit near “average”, some power, patient at the plate to wear a pitcher down, gets on base. No one thing that is great but a lot of pluses in a wide range of skills. With a thin bench, that skill set in one player is valuable considering he does not have to carry the team.
Since not seeing the Padres at this point shelling out big money to anyone … a long shot on a “creative contract”.

I dont think Alfaro cones back on a Minor league deal nor does Hedges... But if we don't trade for One of the Jays trio... how about old pal Luis Torrens on a minor/MLB league deal . Just like Teheran... Good Insutance and solid backup .. low cost insurance
Tucker Barnhart, LHH very hard to find in a C. Has won two GG at C, and mind you it was in CIN, had some very productive years at the plate. He has also played a little 1B, so a bit of versatility. Plus, coming off a down year in DET, should not be an expensive sign.

I can see ST being a winner takes all for #6 … for now giving #5 to Morejon given the upside in the Padres view … so Avila, Groome, Weathers, and Knehr are in battle with Teheran (Non-roster). Don’t expect any of the other current non-roster SP to seek ahead of that group.
That group should make for an interesting ST since none are a clear cut leader. Does Teheran rebound to near his previous level (he is still relatively young) … and that was very good in the ML? Is that “potential” most saw in Groome when he was drafted and Preller saw when he got him last year really there and ML ready? Who is the real Avila once removed for the 40 man only to be added again? What happened to Weathers and is there anything still in him? Is Knehr a talent just under the radar or just body with stuff?
Outside chance by mid-season … a AAA/AA prospect may emerge as a SP factor.
