I could see (if he is not getting a contract offer to his liking) Profar returning to the Padres on a “creative” contract with incentives / options … he loved playing here last season and the Padres loved him.

He fits that “super utility” profile that can cover a lot of positions, runs the bases, hit near “average”, some power, patient at the plate to wear a pitcher down, gets on base. No one thing that is great but a lot of pluses in a wide range of skills. With a thin bench, that skill set in one player is valuable considering he does not have to carry the team.

Since not seeing the Padres at this point shelling out big money to anyone … a long shot on a “creative contract”.

I would counter with Cesar Hernandez. Switch hitter the same as Profar, a better INF than Profar, can play the OF, and has similar career numbers to Profar (Profar was much better last season), and stole twice as many bases as Profar last season. He is a couple of years older, should fit to the veteran super utility fine, and should come at half the price of Profar.

I feel like we need 1 more C .. AAA/MLB.. I dont think Alfaro cones back on a Minor league deal nor does Hedges... But if we don't trade for One of the Jays trio... how about old pal Luis Torrens on a minor/MLB league deal . Just like Teheran... Good Insutance and solid backup .. low cost insurance

Tucker Barnhart, LHH very hard to find in a C. Has won two GG at C, and mind you it was in CIN, had some very productive years at the plate. He has also played a little 1B, so a bit of versatility. Plus, coming off a down year in DET, should not be an expensive sign.

He makes some sense on a major league contract and the Padres carry 3 catchers allowing Campusano / Nola DH/1B time as needed while having insurance over a 162 game schedule.

No idea the price (likely max one year deal) but given his recent work … should not expect to get more than a back-up role from anyone.

Still thinking bringing Profar back is a no brainer.

Ultra versatile, fan favourite, good in the locker room, maybe sign for less???

I can see ST being a winner takes all for #6 … for now giving #5 to Morejon given the upside in the Padres view … so Avila, Groome, Weathers, and Knehr are in battle with Teheran (Non-roster). Don’t expect any of the other current non-roster SP to seek ahead of that group.

After reading this, I dont think there is anyway that Preller doesnt add another true ML level SP. Martinez was barely average last season as a SP, it wasnt until he moved to the BP that he got real good. So he is a #5 IMO. Morejon is fine, but will be limited to 60-70 IP max this season, and that will get you 10-13 starts max. Teheran is a very good find for a bounce back option, but at this time we can not count on him, and as you said, the collection of Groome, Weathers, etc all have warts that can not be counted on at this time for a WS caliber team.

Gotta go get Kluber or Cueto, or some AJP special trade that none of us see coming.

With the spending spree this offseason, my max on him would still be in the $2-3M range......maybe $4M tops if one of my trusted scouts loved what he saw on film or something.

Good option … just not sure he will come in that cheaply. He probably is aiming at a full time 2B role given that has been his profile for years. Not sure any team wants a 2B but that could be the hold up on signing him.

Only thing I don't like about Profar is how he runs (like molasses ) one would think he is much faster than he actually is.. all things consider WIL MYERS (assuming his knee is 100%) at 75% or less the cost of Profar is much > value...

Agree on the SP ..while much deeper than 2021.. Still too many ?? After 1st 3.. need a 4th (who can pitch like a 2 or 3 for Insurance on 123) .. so Kubler/Eovaldi .. if Pads think Teheran is close to his former self .. maybe a fine #4 type (with low expectations of covering top 3) like Davies/Cueto/Lugo or even Old man Rich Hill would be fine... But 💯  we need +1 SP arm in SD..and +1 more (along with Teheran) depth experienced AAA depth... Wolf and Brito could put themselves in that next up convo with very strong 1st halfs at AA...

Cesar Hernandez played 10 games in LF last year. His only other OF experience was 22 games in CF as a rookie in 2013. I don't know that you can really say that he can play the OF. Even if he can he seems to be declining offensively. I wouldn't want that bat in the OF. We don't need a light hitting 2B only player.

Joe Ross on a Teheran like contract..minor league ..1/6 mlb ST invite would be something I'd consider

Agreed.

See Frazier, Adam as an example of what NEVER to trade for.
