No more shift and Hosmer comes back to hitting 280-300

No more playing and he comes back 280-300 pounds a better guess.

Unless I’m missing something….what is the incentive for Hosmer to even play again?

He gets the $13 mil either way so…..

Only if he just wants to keep playing baseball?

I’m not sure there is any incentive unless he wants to just play or try to win another series. Is there a requirement in MLB for a player under contract to try to get a job? Being away from family for 7-8 months out of the year or still get paid to not be away from family? Easy choice unless being around the sport is what drives him

Apparently AJP looking for 1 P and 1 Bat with Justin Turner a possibility

If we sign Justin Turner I'm going to need therapy before Spring Training.

Next  question…he’s paid $13 mil by SD no matter who signs him or for how much correct?

So if team A offers ML minimum and team B offers $2 million…he doesn’t make any more with team B but SD saves money with team B.

So if he wants to play he just gets to decide where for reasons besides $….correct?

So then there’s zero chance we save any more than league minimum.

Or am I missing something?

Build a resume for his next contract?

Once he clears waivers he is a FA and no requirement to even try to seek employment.

The way I see it SD is on the hook for everything less the league minimum that still is the responsibility of BOST … if he does not play.

Just don’t know the rule on if he is released and signs as a FA with another team for more than the league minimum. I guess the money could go back to BOST first to offset the league minimum and any excess back to SD. Don’t think Hosmer makes any more …

Hosmer works for his contract but has a free choice on where he wants to play (MIA, KC). However, being devious, IF he has multiple suitors he might be able to get one to sign him to a new contract for a 4th year only at X with no intention of keeping him. Current deal is in-tact.

Hard to see any benefit to SD.

Putting the current roster in perspective …

Offense now vs most of 2022:

IN: (full seasons) Bogaerts; Soto; Tatis >

OUT: Hosmer; Myers: Voit; Profar

TBD: 9th hitter

Major upgrade already

============

SP is still TBD but

OUT: Clevinger (4.33); Gore (4.50); Manaea (4.96) … not a high bar

IN: Martinez as a SP where he had a low-mid 4 ERA in 2022 as #4

TBD: #5/#6 with a threshold of a 4-5 ERA

=============

Padres made the playoffs with the “OUT” but the offense is already better and the pitching only needs a decent fit for the back end to make the overall team stronger.

So, tinkering on the fringe for now should be sufficient for this roster.
