The Twins are in agreement with outfielder Joey Gallo on a one-year deal that will pay him $11MM, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post and Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Precursor to a Kepler deal?
Should help set the value of Conforto you would think, very similar players.

That's where AJ likes to work and it should start to heat up soon. We've also reached the point where not a lot of information is leaking before signings happen. I'm sure there will still be a few significant moves.
Preller is usually good for at least one "shocker" per offseason trade wise, I guess we will see.
Also while Padres (36) are way low on their 40 man Roster most MLB teams are right up against it.. why we see Waivers/DFA moves everytime a team signs a FA or adds a player.. There could be a get or 2 this way... Tyler Scott for example (lol) just got released by Phillies to make room for Walker.... as teams sign 1 or +2 players better and better pieces tend to be available...and I am still looking at a ST move (if not prior to) involving a BP arm pr 2.. perhaps even Pomz if he shows healthy and good form in ST .. could fill a need at the time we may still have...
Yeh I could see some waiver wire claims for the empty roster spots (can always DFA them or some others if the spot is needed). A chance some ML veterans will be a major upgrade over the incumbent group.
In ST (if not sooner) I can see a RP or two being moved for a supporting piece. Simply the Padres have a strong group of RP that all will not make the final 13 pitchers ... with a good number who cannot be optioned but may be not ticketed for the 26 man roster with others just better they become trade chips.
Pomeranz will be interesting to see in ST ... if he is healthy and showing well in ST games he becomes valuable to some team (maybe the Padres) BUT if at the same time Lopez - Castillo - Cosgrove as LHRP are also impressive and / or if Morejon returns as a RP ... he becomes a trade chip with only one year control but at $10MM for 2023 a good price for a plus RP. A lot of moving parts and IF situations ... so just hope he is healthy and performing in ST.

How is Gallo similar to Comforto??? Value wise YES 1/11 1/12 1/10 should get it done on a "Prove it" deal... but one (Comforto) is a much better hitter (+.50+ points) and the other is not

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 16, 2022, 1:32 pmJoey Gallo has hit .183 in 1252 PAs since the start of 2020. At a certain point you have to stop expecting a bounce back. Giving him 11m is wild to me.

I dont understand this... Gallo and Kepler are very similar ..
Not necessarily Kepler to the Padres. Kepler had a 2.0 WAR last year vs Gallo at 0.8 with a slight lower wRC+ and worse dWAR in about the same PA. Kepler is cheaper for 2023 and has a $10MM club option for next year.
Twins do have some other highly regarded LHH OF/DH options so not sure why adding Gallo was in the mix unless as a precursor to a trade (Kepler has been speculated as a trade chip most of the winter).
Sort of a buyers choice with Gallo HR power / high K% with Kepler more (but not good) OBP and doubles type (actually SLG was similar).

BENI to White Sox 5/75
It is the market ... surprised on the CWS the $75MM/5 is more than most projected.
If Gallo gets $11MM ... Benintendi get AAV $15MM ... and bounce back pitchers get around $10MM ... Conforto will get a very good one year deal but not from the Padres in that cost / risk bracket.
NYY apparently were in the hunt for Benintendi ... needing a LHH LF. Maybe a home for Kepler or Profar has been linked to NYY.

Power wise and OBP they are similar, with better BA to Conforto and better defense to Gallo. And both are LHH. Very similar.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 16, 2022, 1:35 pmThis lefty just got DFA by Jays... he has some starting experience and seems to be improving yr to yr.. the K/9 in 2022 pretty elite... needs better control but could be one of those DFA signings we've been talking about... He was DFA'd to make room for Bassitt

Moving around the OF and rotating others as the DH?
I would imagine with an acquisition of Reynolds, Soto would go to LF, Reynolds in RF, and Grisham in CF. Upon the return of Tatis, a rotation of Soto, Tatis, and Reynolds as DH with Reynolds sliding between LF, CF and RF depending on who is DH for the day. Grisham could see match up starts, or.....Grisham becomes trade bait in that scenario, with a more permanent OF alignment of Soto in LF, Reynolds in CF, and Tatis in RF. Still would sign Gamel and have Azocar as bench OF help.
