2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 16, 2022, 11:55 amQuote from lafnboy13 on December 16, 2022, 11:45 amI agree that he would have been awesome last year on the team but, IMO, the greater need right now is in the rotation.
I can understand that point of view, but that can still be accomplished with money in the likes of Wacha, Kluber, or Cueto. You can not get a bat/fielder like Reynolds for under $7M in free agency.
What specific young stud SP is your target?

Many of us prefer LH. And Reynolds (SH) has requested a trade out of PIT. Now, PIT has said they are not going to trade him, but would it behoove SD to go in and "overpay" and convince PIT to send Reynolds to SD?
PIT is rumored to want a "Soto" type return, but we also got Bell in that trade, where we sent Voit and 5 MiL to WAS. So lets say that 4 of them were for Soto. Abrams was ML ready, and then the balance was highly regarded prospects.
Would Campusano, Merrill, Zavala, and Lesko work for both sides? PIT top prospect according to MLB.com is a C, so they may not have interest in Campusano. But maybe they want his bat for DH/1B. Maybe add Weathers if they want a SP for the next few seasons.
Actually WASH Gore and Adams … both Top 25 types and ML ready plus Hassell and Wood both killing it in full season ball and currently into the Top 100 … plus Susana.
Soto is supposedly better than Reynolds so would command a stronger return (two months of Bell as a rental would not get much of a return … sort of a push for Voit).
So, still would think the suggestion would feel light for PITT to accept. Lesko yet to pitch with TJ, Zavala only touched full season, Campusano appears to be a fading star (at a position they don’t need) … and Merrill the prize but a few years out. Basically short on established Top 100 types and short on ML ready (near term). PITT probably could do better from another team.

Quote from fenn68 on December 16, 2022, 12:26 pmBeginning to consider the team we see is the team we start the season with except for some “minor” fringe adjustments.
Stepping away from what we think the Padres could do or should do … and just looking at what Preller has done … a lot of “interest” reported but except for Bogaerts did not chase the price as it went up nor did he drop bucks on mid-range players.
Signed Suarez early (in what now seems like a bargain for a closer) and Martinez (on a creative contract for a starter / reliever that also seems like a bargain).
We want to believe the Padres have (and want to) spend … not so sure UNLESS it is on a major add (Bogaerts). However, does not seem they are interested in overpaying for the mediocrity left.
Also, the idea of waiting to the trade deadline to make a move may be a strategy we should consider that Preller may deploy. IF Preller thinks enough of the current roster and the current “fringe” options getting them in the playoff hunt to the trade deadline … he buys time to sort through what the Padres have and can target the best add given limited trade chips at a lower cost money/prospects.
Would expect a couple of “bargain” fringe options just before ST as the players are panicking to get a job … we may like player A over player B but Preller may not see enough of a difference to care which one for a “fringe” role.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 16, 2022, 12:41 pmThe trade market still hasn't really taken off yet. That's where AJ likes to work and it should start to heat up soon. We've also reached the point where not a lot of information is leaking before signings happen. I'm sure there will still be a few significant moves.

You could be right, considering that we made it to the NLCS with a rotation of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove that is still intact. The return of Martinez and the add of Teheran should cover the departure of Manaea and Clevinger, neither of which were overly stellar. And the bull pen is really the same as it was into the playoffs. Plus we could have a healthy Pomeranz return as well.
Soto, Grisham, Machado, Kim, Crone, and Nola all still here and then added Bogaerts, plus the "add" of Tatis. We may just need to add some capable ML bench players. Azocar and Campusano are fine and have some room for improvement. In expensive adds of Gamel, Barnhart, and Hernandez would round out a very respectable bench. Should be able to get all 3 of those for a combined cost of $8-11M.

Preller is usually good for at least one "shocker" per offseason trade wise, I guess we will see.

Also while Padres (36) are way low on their 40 man Roster most MLB teams are right up against it.. why we see Waivers/DFA moves everytime a team signs a FA or adds a player.. There could be a get or 2 this way... Tyler Scott for example (lol) just got released by Phillies to make room for Walker.... as teams sign 1 or +2 players better and better pieces tend to be available...and I am still looking at a ST move (if not prior to) involving a BP arm pr 2.. perhaps even Pomz if he shows healthy and good form in ST .. could fill a need at the time we may still have...

1yr/$11mil for Gallo... good situation and ballpark for him in Twinkieville
Outfielder Joey Gallo and the Minnesota Twins are in agreement on a one-year contract, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.
