2023 offseason
Quote from dusty on December 14, 2022, 3:06 pmQuote from Henry Silvestre on December 14, 2022, 3:05 pmI have a feeling Padres are getting Othani either at the Deadline or Uncle Peter just saying fk it 10/500.. next offseason while keeping Yu.. and extending Manny
I was thinking 12/550 but will be crazy to think if they can do that. Could then deal soto if they can’t keep both for the prospect haul

Sott of my thinking with the drop of Hader + Pomz + Snell + Soto + Garcia= the $$ for Othani.. and Hosmer drops after 1 yr then..
Othani replaces Soto and Snell and can argue Improves or at least matches them ..
Our BP can be re constructed with Suarez becoming the closer..and peeps moving up a slot up..
Unless offcourse Pete says we keeping Soto too.. Crazy Times!

I don't think Japanese pitchers like being on the same team in America

Quote from sportwarrior on December 14, 2022, 4:05 pm1/13 for Syndergaard feels fairly reasonable. It also could be $13m for a "starter" who averages 4+ ip per start with an era north of 4.

I've actually been thinking the same thing.
We're already paying him, guys like him, he's a left handed bat......why not?

Put him in the 6 or 7 hole.

Quote from fenn68 on December 14, 2022, 4:22 pmAs money is flying around and we think about adds … maybe we should focus on retaining Machado - Darvish - Snell who could be FA after the season.
Machado is a key to retain. Just looking at the contracts given to the big 3 SS they all have lower AAV but giving long contracts that take them to age 40. AAVs: Turner ($27.3MM), Correa ($26.9MM), and Bogaerts ($25.5MM). Machado has 5 years with a $30MM AAV to opt out of (and probably not wanting to hit FA at age 36) … so would think he would be very receptive to an extension … Machado seems to like his situation and Siedler (and visa versa).
Just looking at the three recently signed contracts … a $25-27MM AAV is what a 10 year contract would be logical for Machado on the FA market. However, he has $30MM AAV in the pocket for the next five. Although mathematically to get a comparable 10 year AAV the extension years would be well under $25MM/yr but that will not happen from Siedler. If the Padres added five years at his same $30MM AAV he would actually top the three SS. Settle on an AAV in that $25-27MM range and he still tops the others because of the first three years. Need to get it done before he has to make a decision.
==========
Darvish and Snell are a bit trickier … but most seem to think the 2024 FA crop is not all that great … so, locking down what the Padres have before FA should be an good objective but their agents see the same thing and an extension will not be easy … maybe Darvish a bit easier because of his age and all reports are his wife / family want to live in SD. Another case of getting it done before they hit FA.
