One competitor in trading a SS maybe the the Giants ... with Correa coming in and will play SS ... the plan to move Crawford to 3B is not sitting well with Crawford who is say he is a SS and that is where he wants to be. Crawford is good defensively but not (in 2022) the hitter he was. FA after 2023 and carrying a pretty steep contract about $16MM ... so Kim probably has the advantage.

Im sure Preller wants another SS for some reason, maybe we make a trade for Crawford.......is a LH bat!! Hahahaha 🙂

In all seriousness though, unless the trade demands are completely in different universes, there is no way a team would choose Crawford over Kim. Kim had a 107 OPS+ last season compared to Crawfords OPS+ 85, and lifetime OPS+ of 99. Plus, Crawford and Kim are owed about the same money, but you get Kim for two years instead of one, and Kim is the better glove at this point in time.

Agree UNLESS the team can dump and equally inflated contract for a player they no longer want / need. Alternative a team with money might take Crawford if SF add a prospect in and does not have to give up any real talent.

So not out of the question.

So Crawford and a prospect for Pomeranz coming down the pipe soon?!?!?! 😉 Hahahaha

In a world turned upside down the Padres as they stand have the 3rd highest projected CBT payroll (per Cot's):

  1. NYM $344MM
  2. NYY $264MM
  3. SD $255MM (second tier)
  4. PHIL $231MM
  5. ATL $224MM
  6. TOR $223MM
  7. LAA $205MM
  8. SF $200MM
  9. TEX $196MM
  10. STL $192MM

Looking for LAD ... #14 at $187MM

Lux Tax starts at $233MM and with all the money being thrown around a bit surprised only 3 teams over and one is the Padres by a good amount.

Don't know the mind set for PHIL, ATL, and TOR but they are close to the first threshold and will that be a factor in further signings? Motivate them to trade a piece that carries a significant salary to offset any FA signing?

NYM, NYY, SD are spending big money to get into the playoffs ... does that get them to the WS?

Moving away from trade talk for a minute. AJ Cassavell says that they're still looking at the 1B market. The idea would be to rotate guys through at DH and possibly shield Kim from tougher righties. Maybe they gamble on someone like Matt Carpenter or Brandon Belt.

For me, Belt would be a hard no, not that great against RHP, and appears to not be aging well.

Carpenter, did appear to find his stroke again last season, after drifting into oblivion the previous 3 seasons 2019-2021. And for his 2022 numbers got to remember, he was ungodly in NYY Stadium last season. He was still decent on the road, but nothing like he was in Yankee Stadium. Would really be concerned about how the bigger parks of the NL West could cancel those numbers from last season.

Would think, for the money, that Dominic Smith might be the better gamble, especially over Belt.

Some interesting discussions on why the LAD are so low and not apparently really pursuing FA.

  1. They want to get younger with a deep set of ML ready prospects and start a new phase
  2. They want to get position to go all in on Othani next winter
  3. They may have a 2023 issue with Trevor Bauer ... apparently his suspension (without pay) is being reviewed and there is a chance (since no criminal charges) the LAD may be on the hook for about $60MM (not exact) if the suspension is put aside and they grant him the retro pay ... apparent all will go against the 2023 luxury tax.

With all that an probably a belief that they can make the playoffs (even win the NL West) with the current roster and make their move at the trade deadline after the Bauer issue is resolved.

If $20MM ... I would just take the cheapest of Syndergaard, Kluber, Wacha, Cueto, and maybe Lugo since most projections have them all about the same in 2023 (mid-4 ERA). Preller probably has some other separators among those five and probably some of the don't want to go to SD vs Team X.

Lugo might be the better add, could be in the same mold as Martinez last season. Let him see how it goes as a SP to start the season, and then would be able to transition to long man/relief role as needed. And right, with Teheran that could be the 4th starter. Probably has the better ability to pitch over Martinez.

I do think that $20M was earmarked just for pitching.

I still see them adding another bat outside that $20M. Dont think they are blinking at penalties this offseason.

Lugo Spin rate is insane... yes please..

Lugo still has a partially torn UCL. As much as I hate to say it I think the Padres need innings more than talent out of their last starter.

That fits ... especially since every indication is that the Padres will want the DH as a rotational position.
