2023 offseason

PreviousPage 208 of 376Next

If $20MM ... I would just take the cheapest of Syndergaard, Kluber, Wacha, Cueto, and maybe Lugo since most projections have them all about the same in 2023 (mid-4 ERA). Preller probably has some other separators among those five and probably some of the don't want to go to SD vs Team X.

Want to leave as much on the table for that 9th hitter ... not going with Azocar or Dixon or Batten or Sullivan or Dahl if he is added to the roster. Leave $10MM for a bat would easily get Gurriel or Myers or likely Drury or Profar all significant upgrades from the incumbents. Still have a bad bench but at least one is not starting.

Chance Preller see those five SP and those four hitters as interchangeable parts (no significant difference) and is just willing to wait a sign the last man (or near last) at a cost lower than the current demands. Meanwhile, he works on trades for better options (maybe at lower salaries).

Side: keep thinking Teheran is really in the mix otherwise Preller would not have signed him with a $6MM contract if he makes the ML roster. Sure has not pitched in the ML for sometime but only 31 and never was a power pitcher (his velocity is back to his successful past 90mph. So, knows how to pitch and if his health is fully back (and he was doing fine in winter ball) he has a legit chance. If ST is kind to him ... and Preller is playing the long game on adding another SP ... he may be the winner.

With Teheran, he could be the one that they are "paying" to sit in MiL until injury requires the call up, like I was suggesting with Davies. Still would like someone better than Martinez for #4 spot. Syndergaard would seem the best option, youngest and going into his second season from TJ surgery, so probably will have a regular off season work out, and maybe the best candidate to improve from last season.

Lugo could be a good add, in the same mold as Martinez last season. Let him see how it goes as a SP to start the season, and then would be able to transition to long man/relief role as needed.

So chase Syndergaard, and Teheran already has taken the split contract safety option.

I do think that $20M was earmarked just for pitching.

I still see them adding another bat outside that $20M. Dont think they are blinking at penalties this offseason.

Probably has the better ability to pitch over Martinez.

Lugo Spin rate is insane... yes please..

Don't count us out on Eovaldi either..AJP been trying to get him 2 or 3 times in the past already

Need Swanson to sign with some odd team like Red Sox or Cubs... so HSK value skyrockets with teams that are great fits in play

His signing will really open the trade route ... hope he signs with a team that has nothing the Padres would want (or get) in a trade ... leave the better trade partners in play.

Keep in mind that Preller sets a value on his targets and if the market pushes the price higher ... he usually moves on ... not a guy who chases a player. Probably why the Padres were finalist on many but never got them signed. Bogaerts does not appear to be chasing other bids ... given well higher than other reportedly ... just had a higher valuation and got him locked down as soon as he could.

No idea what any of the are asking but have to think (now) all are above Preller's limit ... so he waits for one to crack.

Best thing in regards to trade value for Kim is MIN and ATL getting shut out on Swanson, the make the most sense in terms of being compatative and especially in the case of the Twins, being dollar sensative.

What might keep Preller out on Eovaldi is his injury history ... at 33 and IL twice in 2022 (once lower back and once right shoulder). Had a good 2021 but before that a long way to get back to him delivering 30 starts +/-.

If the Padres are going to spend it probably will be for someone who the perceive has a better chance of delivering the starts / innings. Given he is also a QO player and the Padres lose more draft picks beyond the contract size ... would think too big a risk for the potential return.

Also those two teams may have the best match for the Padres in a return ... with at least some belief those players would be available.

One competitor in trading a SS maybe the the Giants ... with Correa coming in and will play SS ... the plan to move Crawford to 3B is not sitting well with Crawford who is say he is a SS and that is where he wants to be. Crawford is good defensively but not (in 2022) the hitter he was. FA after 2023 and carrying a pretty steep contract about $16MM ... so Kim probably has the advantage.
