Do we really have the scouting to believe Merrill is a better defense SS than Bogaerts? Merrill may arrive as a 2B for all we know.

Scouts I've talked to say Merrill is the best fielding SS in SD (minors and MLB)... so take that for what it is..

Arraez is a good hitter but not a premium position player no power and questionable defense which flys against the theme of having quality defense up the middle without the shift.
I put Kim’s value (not a bad hitter but elite defense and versatility to cover SS) above Arraez for the Padres.
Even better, Kim straight up for Arraez, leave Crone at 2B, and put Arraez at 1B, where he played 65 games for MIN in 2022.
That might be the better defensive alignment …. Based on Fangraphs WAR in 2022 they were about the same (Kim slightly better). Kim is only about $2MM more than Arraez in 2023 so money is not the issue. Padres do pick up an extra control year in Arraez and a LHH for the lead-off slot.
So, a pretty equal deal of adding offense while lowering defense at 1B.
Now if that happened be prepared of the complaints that want POWER at 1B. However, since not much change in payroll … Padres could still be in the market for a defensive 1B with Power (Myers looking at you) and Arraez becomes the DH/utility piece (as he was in MINN) that could pop up at 2B/1B/LF. Padres do need a net +1 hitter and that would still be there in a Kim/Arraez swap.
Even if that is a good deal on both sides … would not be surprised Preller would try for a deal with more parts … specifically Kepler (LHH, plus defense in OF) to protect against the unknowns surrounding Tatis. Even if Tatis is healthy … Kepler seeing time in RF might allow Tatis to DH in an effort to keep him healthy or free him up for SS/2B if injuries happen to Bogaert or others.

And usually, I would be one to complain about that. However, I think we have enough power on this team with Machado, a full season of Soto, the add of Bogaerts, and close to a full season of Tatis. Even Crone and Grisham have some power. Arraez sets the table for the power/RBI guys behind him.
Myers is a fan favorite, plays the game right, and is good at 1B and LF. Would be a good balance between Arraez and Myers.

At that time, you could get closer to your original deal, Kim and Pomeranz for Arreaz and Kepler. Maybe add Kerr into the deal to help offset the health question of Pomeranz.

Personally would never rely on Spotrac since the seem to be consistently out of step with the two pretty reliable source in Cot's and Roster Resource.
Did we not just go over the difference between Othani's contact signed before he turned 24 (so subject to the 6 years control) and someone else who signed after age 24 where the control years don't apply.
Who runs Spotrac?

AJP/Peter need a face to face with Manny and Kim "Before" though the Chemistry of the Team comes 1st... then ask for the Moon/the stars and the sun for HSK
Where are you getting 4 years of control from, cite your source.
Yes, Kim is valuable, but he is not the most valuable trade chip in baseball. He might not even be the most valuable trade chip in SD.
Obviously Tatis and Soto are both better trade chips.
As is Musgrove with all these new contracts recently....and Cronenworth....and Manny.
