Basically, its an extra 2 years and $70M over Bogaerts, or an extra $1.5M per season over Bogaerts. I do think think that the Correa deal will age better than the Bogaerts deal, especially since Bogaerts will probably need to move to 2B within the next 2-4 years.

The big question with Bogaerts will be how his bat translates to Pecto, and the bigger parks of the NL West. I think his HR numbers will suffer, but see an increase in his doubles and maybe some triples from him.

Adding Correa, Haniger, Manaea, and Stripling will make the Giants more competitive … but they still are weak overall hitting-wise. Going to be interesting as to what they do with a very good incumbent SS in Crawford.

At least Correa did not go to the LAD.

I heard on XM this morning that Perez and Phillips thought that Crawford would move to 3B, with Longoria being a FA.

Past the Correa signing some interesting discussion on the increasing value of quality fielding SS / 2B with the shift gone in 2023. Defense will get paid.

Swanson remains the only decent SS FA target … MINN, NYY, CUBS, ATL, some others like BOST (some speculation that Story will not go back to SS). Supply and demand.

Enter Kim … a very good defensive SS who is under control for 3 years at a comparatively bargain salary. Padres go with Cronenworth at 2B. For any team that does not want to give a big long term contract to Swanson … Kim has to look pretty good as an alternative and should yield a quality return.

Let the trade rumors begin … plus if Kim traded coupled with the theoretical defensive versatility of Tatis (RF/2B/1B) the return could go a lot of ways if the Padres get the “right” player(s) in return.

Guessing MINN will return as the first rumor since they were really in on Correa … and with Kepler (some other OF)  and maybe Sonny Gray in play.

I know that many/most of us here on this board have become big fans of Kim, and even think that he might have a little more improvement with the bat again in 2023.

However, we now have 6 SS's on this team, and with the defensive ability of Kim and the FA price of the SS this offseason, I believe that we have an asset that we are going to under utilize here in SD at 2B.

With only one top level FA SS left on the market, and up to 5 teams still in on Swanson, I really think that SD can leverage Kim with one of the teams that loses out on Swanson. I would not trade Kim to LAD. But, one of the following you would think would be really interested in Kim, MIN, ATL, BOS, and maybe CHC or STL who have all been linked to Swanson.

What would you want from each of those teams that would help SD this season?

Just beat me to this same post!! 🙂

Let the trade rumors begin

MIN - I think Kim is worth a lot more than Kepler, and I dont think they would trade Gray, as they are still play off hopefuls this season. I want Arraez from MIN.

ATL - Kim for D'Arnaud with some other pieces to make sure both playoff teams are covered for back ups.

CHC - Could we get Mervis?

BOS - Could we get Casas?

I will open the bidding with Kim to MINN.

MINN gets:

1. Kim … 2 years control … $7MM, $8MM (huge bargain cost in this environment)

2. Pomeranz … 1 year control … $10MM (MINN has to gamble on health but a need and will serve to balanace the dollars in this proposal)

SD gets:

1. Kepler (LHH plus defensive OF) … 2 years control … $8.5MM, $10MM

2. Gray (RHP … upper rotation type) … 1 year control … $12.5 MM (in the discussion since the TWINS have a good remaining staff with a number of top arms in AAA)

3. Martin (OF/INF in minors) … once a top draft pick and an excellent hitter (contact type) but bogged down in AA). .. added to the deal to compensate for the Padres picking up $4MM net payroll in 23 and $2MM in 24.

MINN should be able to cover the loss of Kepler / Gray internally and with a real need for a SS (and for two years) … Kim works.

MINN: would like Arraez (AL batting champ) but no power and bad defensively with MINN playing him at 1B/LF not middle INF … for that reason could be available … would be a great lead-off hitter. Could see a Kim for Arraez as pretty close covering needs for both teams … possible.

ATL: guessing they may stick with the kid Grissom at SS who was impressive at the end of 2022.

Not seeing BOST or CHI … as long shot contenders likely will not move a decent longer term prospect for two years of Kim. Maybe Swanson works since he will get a long deal and give up no prospects.

Might add the NYY into the mix … really in on Correa … really want to upgrade SS defense … a couple of elite prospects in the minors but not ready for the ML … so Kim really fits for them … just can’t see what they offer in return that helps the 2023 Padres.
