2023 offseason
Quote from MrPadre19 on December 13, 2022, 12:39 pmQuote from BoosterSD on December 13, 2022, 12:13 pmHow about this.
Trade 1. SD gets Fried and D'Arnaud. ATL gets Kim, Lesko, Merrril, Nola, and Zavala.
Trade 2. SD gets Arraez. MIN gets Grisham, Kerr, and Crismat.
SD signs Benintendi, Myers, Cesar Hernandez, and Barnhart.
Rotation becomes Darvish, Fried, Musgrove, Snell, Martinez, and Teheran.
Starting 8 are Machado, Bogaerts, Arraez, Crone, D'Arnaud, Benintendi, Tatis, and Soto. Bench of Myers 1B/DH/COF, Hernandez INF/OF, Campusano C, Barnhart C/1B, and Azocar OF.
- Arraez (L) -2B, 2. Machado (R) - 3B, 3. Soto (L) - RF, 4. Bogaerts (R) - SS, 5. Tatis (R) - CF, 6. Crone (L) - 1B, 7. D'Arnaud (R) - C, 8. Benintendi (L) - LF, 9. Myers (R) - DH
I'd be ecstatic if we did these deals BUT also worried that we would then have "zero" prospects to count on in the next 3 years.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 13, 2022, 12:39 pmQuote from BoosterSD on December 13, 2022, 12:34 pmAny thoughts about bringing back Hedges?
With this line up, the DH, and the new throw over rules. Could we not live with his canon arm and feather lite bat in the 9 spot? Hell, couldnt we DH for Hedges and just let the pitcher bunt again, like in days gone by?? HAHAHA
Campusano and Nola can concentrate a little more on hitting and spell Hedges for about 30-40 games, based on the teams that we are playing
Been thinking about Hedges a lot .. lol.. same with Alfaro at around $2.5 /1

Questions about his health?
It's one thing to spend on a guy like Xander that has a good health record...yet another for Rodon.
Not saying we won't consider it...but its a bit of a different animal.
Probably why he hasn't signed as of yet.

Health is always an issue but his demand for $210MM+ for 7 years … knowing he is the best pitcher out there at age 30 and the NYY and SF are after him … just lets this drag on to get to that level. Most thought the risk level maxed at 5 years and a 6th year is iffy … the 7th year is a big leap for a SP.
Although I don’t like long term deals on general principles … but understand the market realities … I would only do that length for a position player (ideally one with a solid health profile) … so Machado, Bogaerts, and Soto if he is resigned make sense (put Tatis in a different category) … but would not go that long for a 30 year old pitcher.
Having said that … this is Siedler / Preller so??? Rodon is elite …. If they are going to spend $30MM on a mediocre SP + DH + bench upgrade are they better off with Rodon and scramble around league minimum for the two additional bat?

Dont care if we win a World Series. To quote Casey Stearn MLB on XM talking head, "Prospects are cool, parades are cooler!" And its not like SD doesnt spend money anymore, and prospects are gambles.
Besides, Arraez is controlled through 2025, and Fried until 2024, and D'Arnaud through 24 with a team option for $8M. So its not like they are one and done.

We could make those deals and sign Rodon and lose in the first round of the playoffs (dodgers)
While I am most certainly with you and all I want is a Championship before I die....nothing guarantees one.
I'm just guessing that AJ is hesitant to trade Merrill and a few others for this very reason.
While we are most definitely "all in" and our window is wide open...it just worries me to completely gut the system.

What would the Padres payroll be if that happened?

What would the Padres payroll be if that happened?
Fried - $12.2M Estimated Arb. D'Arnaud $8M. Kim $7M, no ML money for the prospects. $13.2M add to SD.
Arreaz - $5M Estimated Arb. Grisham $2.6M Estimated Arb, Kerr and Crismat are ML min. $1.5M combined. $1M add to SD.
Benintendi $14M, Myers $7.5M, Hernandez $5M, Barnhart $2.5M. $29-30M add to SD.
About $44.5M give or take based on MLBTR estimated arbitration and free agent guesses, plus a little padding for the over priced 2022-23 offseason. Added to where ever SD is now, havent taken the time to add with Bogaerts, Martinez, and Suarez.
Would imagine that it would push close to $300M, including penalties.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 13, 2022, 5:23 pmWith using and looking at Roster Resource, depending on how the buyouts for Suarez, Martinez, etc are counted. Current 2023 CBT money including the cash for Hosmer, is sitting between $254M and $259M. We are definitely in the 2nd penalty range now.
