Bummer on Senga. In a bit of rationalization … but maybe our projection on Senga was higher than MLB teams (not that he will not be good but maybe not so good). In this period where all the players (especially pitchers) are far exceeding initial contract estimates … Senga come in on estimate at “only” $15MM AAV.
Still would have liked to add him … it will be interesting to hear the rumors of his reasons for signing with the METS.

I guess I am in the camp of NOT trading Grisham, Kim, or Campy in a package for a SP. Already need to add a minimum of one (probably two) hitters … and finding replacement of equal quality at an equal (or lower) cost at this stage of the winter is not going to happen.
Expand a trade to include getting other pieces in return … but the other team is not going to give up a quality ML SP AND equal replacement players for the MLers the Padres dealt.
Would guess a team like MIA would demand at least one premium prospect (Merrill) along with other pieces since they are in a Division with NYM, ATL, and PHIL with little chance of the playoffs in the near term.
Padres may be in the position to do some lesser signing(s) to compete with Teheran / Morejon / Avila / Groome for the #5 slot. Then upgrade their target for the 9th hitter to even strengthen to offense.

The QO penalties are less for the 2nd guy..less for the 3rd guy etc you sign...same $$ international $$ but lower draft pick/s

So Mets +90% penalty...just gave Senga a $15 per + 13.5 penalty =$28.5 mil per contract (as long as they are over tier 3) ouch!

I'd go after Lugo or Strippling at this point t and invite Cole Hamels to ST

So + Verlander + Senga .. - DeGroom - Bassitt... not sure the Mets have improved any..I will argue they have regressed...
Padres + X + Tatis jr.. = Huge improvements
Manea + Clev replacement or = pretty low bar
BP is stronger especially if Pomz is healthy

Plus a full year of Soto … Padres will be in good shape to push for the playoffs and the NL West (unless LAD figure out how to make some significant adds). Once it the playoffs … anybody’s guess … but generally only need 3 principle SP and Darvish, Musgrove, Snell to be a strong performer.

I find it hard to believe….after all we’ve spent…that we go into 2023 with a combo of Martinez/Teheran/Groome as our last two starters.
I could be wrong….but considering we were in on Senga I doubt we just close the wallet and go home now.

Might also consider Kluber as a veteran who pitched innings reasonably effectively last season.
With the offense (especially if they get that 9th regular bat) and a very strong bullpen should do a lot to not require a top pitcher after the big 3 … just “serviceable” arm that can stay healthy and give they 5-6 innings. Mid-4 ERA type.
Given Martinez is the 4th …the 5th/6th FOR NOW is between Teheran, Morejon, Avila, Groome, Knehr … maybe a mix of all of the above. Pretty safe bet that the Padres make at least one veteran add and likely another “Teheran type” veteran rebound candidate.
Wouldn’t rule out a trade … but not for top SP (really don’t have the trade chips without creating other holes) … what they can get for one (or two) of the “surplus” RP and Rosario. Given number of RP that are without options and some will have to go before the season (especially if some of the RP with options are actually better) converting some into a serviceable SP makes.
Oh yeh, Manaea is still out there.

Another thought about the Senga signing is how much weight is given toward playing with another Japanese player (e.g. Darvish, Senga). It seems like that doesn't matter at all.
