Word was that the Padres offered the highest AAV of all his offers and 5 years. One or 2 teams offered 6 years at a lower AAV than the Padres offered. Apparently the Mets didn't offer the highest salary or most years. It seems market size was probably the deciding factor.

This miss hurt. I am not at all excited about any of the remaining free agent starters available outside of Rodon. Got another $180-$200 million available Mr. Seidler?

Rodon, Bassitt and Eovaldi all come with Qualifying Offer baggage.  We already gave up draft picks/international money to sign Bogaerts so may not want to further hamper our minor league system that will also put us well into the next AAV level.  Therefore, it seems the most likely avenue is by trade and we don't have many prospects to trade.  Miami may be the trade partner and it could be either Pablo Lopez or Jesus Luzardo.

Could see multi-player trade with Kim, Grisham, Campusano, Morejon, Rosario and a couple of low salaried RPs for Lopez, Berti, Soler, Wendle and Sixto Sanchez.  Berti and Wendle provide experienced INF depth and either one could play 2b; Soler becomes our DH; Lopez takes over the 4th SP spot and Sanchez has upside if healthy.  Soler and Wendle come off the books in 2024; Lopez has 2 years of control but could be extended.  This reduces the Marlins payroll significantly and gives them some players who are younger and probably at least equal to those traded with a possibility of some upside with the exception of Lopez.  Note and both Luzardo and Sixto Sanchez are Boras clients.  If Miami is willing to deal, this is a possibility but expect a lot of competition for Lopez.  If Miami demands Merrill, then forget it.  I'd settle for Luzardo in a much smaller deal.

There really isn't a clear move from here unless the ownership is comfortable spending way more money and the FO is comfortable with Rodon's injury risk.
