Padres LFGS(enga)D!

It seems there is an article in The Athletic that directly addresses  that question. I'm not a subscriber so I don't know. Anyone?

With the Padres having a supposed deal with Ethan Salas of around $5 million, does this completely take them out of play for free agents who decline qualifying offers? If the Padres were to sign one, they’d have a $1 million international free-agent penalty along with losing a couple of draft picks. — Philip S.

I’d never rule out anything entirely when it comes to Seidler and Preller, but, for now, I have a hard time envisioning them as a favorite for a qualifying-offer free agent. Not because of Salas, an extremely talented 16-year-old catcher the team is expected to sign to a lucrative bonus when the 2023 international signing period begins in January. According to an official familiar with league rules, a team that incurred the luxury tax in 2022 (e.g., the Padres) and subsequently signs a free agent who declined a qualifying offer would forfeit $1 million in bonus-pool money for the 2024 international signing period, not the signing period that starts in two months. (After the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, Major League Baseball pushed back international signing periods by six months. Thus, the 2024 signing period, which begins in January 2024, is the same as the signing period that otherwise would have begun July 2, 2023.)

Unless I missed something with Senga it looks like he's just going to be on a Japanese baseball show with some other players. I don't see any actual source about him planning on announcing his choice on the show.

I guess this could be true….can’t believe even half of what you read any more.

Seidler quote from Lin's latest. I love it.

“As an owner that will be in this game as long as I’m allowed to, we look at a very long-term perspective. We start from that,” Seidler said. “And signing a ‘baseball-struck’ person with (Bogaerts’) level of commitment and leadership, those deals tend to work out. So, strategically, Xander’s a great fit for us. And in baseball, really like with all sports franchises, you can never be done because things always change. And I’m financially trained. I have a budget mind up there somewhere. And I think budgets get better when you win world championships, and that’s our goal.”

With that quote was a focus on "commitment and leadership" tied to long term commitments.

Wonder how much that alters the FA/trade targets by Preller ... maybe not being in on some players we may like because of the stats (but have no idea on the personality / character / commitment to the game). Maybe being in on some we don't consider because whaat the bring is more than just stats.

It literally was just some dude linking to a Japanese tv show that was to feature Senga (among many others). When you actually click through and translate the website, there is absolutely nothing mentioned about Senga announcing anything, nor is there anyone else on Twitter talking about it. Pretty good indications right there that this was probably bs.

Yeah I went back and looked where the rumor started. It was a dude I blocked a long time ago for doing the same shit.

Ok cool. Had a feeling this was the case otherwise that meant zero chance of another QO signing (which may still be the case) or a trade involving another team’s international pool money was going to be happening (which still could happen as well).

OK, how about this for a conspiracy theory. No rumors anywhere, just flat out conjecture on my part.

The "reason" for signing Bogaerts is to help recruit Devers next winter when/if Machado opts out. Devers will be 4 years younger, and about the same bat. Machado is a 18 points higher in OPS+.
