2023 offseason

Could always add a Tyler Naquin for bench duty capable of filling in at CF for a stretch if needed... (if we were to move Grish). BUT I would only move Grish for a clear upgrade at a different position.. if it's a COF it better be one over 3 WAR as Grish value would be +1 WAR > since he could play all 3 spots at GG level and acquiring player would only be COF... only position that would be = in value would be Catcher.. or a young SP ..if COF/1B or DH type the player we acquired needs to be greater than Grish by at least +1 WAR in my book

News on Senga is so slow it's frustrating.

News on Senga is so slow it's frustrating.

Only reason I said the rumors are heating up is chatter on Twitter.

Same person who said we were close on Xander AND Senga, and was correct on Boegarts,is saying we are "at the finish line" with Senga with the dodgers and Mets making last ditched efforts.

Could be complete conjecture but again...they were right about Xander about 2 hours before it was announced so....keeping optimistic.

Side note:it's hilarious all the complaining on social Media about the Padres "buying a championship".

I NEVER thought I'd ever hear those complaints from other teams fans...and its Awesome!

Rodon was originally looking for a 5 year deal. Then 6 years. Right after the Winter Meetings he upped that to the 7 years and $210 million that he is expecting now. Unfortunately Senga, being the next best pitcher available, is just sitting around watching his price rise right now. Yes it sucks!

Hope the source is correct and the Padres land Senga ... may #1 choice as the next key add.

In the "not my money" mode consider the Padres current CBT payroll sits at the beginning of the 3rd tier and as a second time offender the next signing up to about $18MM carries a 42% penalty and then after the payroll moves above $270MM the penalty becomes 75%. Cross $290MM (as the METS) the over is penalized at a whopping 90%.

So, Padres are on track to add to the offense with a 9th hitter and bench ... could cost at least that first $18MM with some of the options being discussed generating a $7.5MM penalty. Then add Senga at maybe $20MM would generate another $15MM penalty. Just staying under the 90% penalty threshold.

Maybe Siedler does not care ... what is another $22.5MM but whew?

I am sure there is some economic analysis that would suggest giving a longer contract at a lower AAV is justified with the lower penalties and the time value of money. Plus if somewhat confident in the player ... will get some good production in the extra years at a bargain price as contracts escalate. Player may like the security and it would make sense to them.

So let say Senga is negotiating $100MM/5 ... but the $20MM AAV carries a $15MM penalty (maybe each year considering the other contracts) ... would it be smarter for the Padres to go to a 7-8 year offer (Senga is only 30) to get his AAV down and lowering the penalties.

Might have been a strategy in the Bogaerts contract.

I did see where AJ tried to give Judge a 14/400 deal.

MLB stepped in and said it was a blatant attempt at circumventing the CBT tax issue.

I'm sure this also happened with Xander...it's "really" an 8/280 deal but stretched out to 11 years for the same reason but after Judge signed an 11 yr deal what could they say?

Are we talking about the rumors from Jenna Toles? Say that one out loud and I think it's safe to say it's not a reliable source. Same goes for Mike Hawk, Ben Dover and all the other troll accounts that pop up in Padres land.

That is a hard argument for the league that approved contracts into the 40s for the likes of Pujols, Cabrera, and others ... and knowing some players who remain productive in their late 30s (think Brady in football).

I am more sinister ... league wanted Judge in NY with the Yankees ... maybe collusion between Manfred and Steinbrenner. Probably not BUT ............
