2023 offseason

Looked at the unsigned hitters  ... there is a ton of them who will be panicking to sign about ST and Padres could sweep in at a low price point. Like some - don't like others but the the difference among the 100 or so options are not so great for a bench piece / part time player ... so no real urgency to spend high on another bat.

More urgency to sign a SP (or two) as those ranks are going quickly from mid-range to just bad.

If money is still there, has to be SP that takes the priority in tapping that money.

Agree... we need SP.. at least 1

And why not sign (minor league with a similar mlb $$ option to Teheran) Cole Hamels with an invite to ST

The other route to add a "serviceable" bench upgrade / part-time hitter (low cost) may be trading out of the RP options were a large number cannot be optioned to the minors.

Intervening issues for the Padres is the perspective of Pomeranz' health and who they add as a SP (which may lessen the need for Morejon to be considered a SP). Might be a late winter / ST action. Also, if the Padres re-sign Johnson or Stammen (good chance) that just makes the pen more overstocked with arms that cannot be optioned.

If everyone is healthy in ST ... almost have to see a trade or two. Not likely from the core Suarez - Garcia - Wilson - Hader - Pomeranz - Hill for a complementary add but if Morejon is in the pen and Pomeranz is healthy ... one could be a decent trade chip (hopefully Pomeranz). Crismatt is out of options ... as would be Johnson / Stammen and Lopez as a Rule 5. Then if Teheran steps up as the #6 SP / long RP ... just another squeeze on the final 13 SP.

So filling out the 13 position players may be an exercise that lingers into ST choosing between trades and signing panicking FA.

If we had won a title recently (or ever) I might be worried about giving Bogaerts 11 years. On a win now team trying to deliver the city it's first championship with Manny, Darvish, Snell and Hader all potentially gone after the season it's a good move. Flags fly forever. I'll gladly watch Bogaerts in 11 years if he helps bring our first.

I really want Manny back.. it would be fun even if we are just mediocre by then, to watch age 40 Xander and Manny chasing down 3000 hits in their way to the HOF

Then again if both are still here Tatis and Soto will still be in their age 33 seasons by then..or  within their last prime yrs

Sign one of them instead of a quality SP? As much as Seidler is spending not going to sign multiple big ticket players.

Not sure on the Grisham trade … don’t expect much in return … would he be a better bench piece at about $2.6MM and controlled for 3 years. A better (cheaper) 4th OF than we will get elsewhere.

———————

Having said that … depends on Pomeranz’ health … deal with MINN:

To MINN: Grisham ($2.6MM …3 years control); Pomeranz ($10MM … 1 year control); Crismatt (league minimum … 4 years control but no minor league options).

To SD: Kepler ($9.5MM … 1 year control) … plus defender for RF and better hitter than Grisham (maybe .230ish)

Grisham and Kepler are both “rebound” candidates … added the other pieces to balance the money and clear out the log jam in the pen.

Note: not getting Arraez ($5MM with 3 control years) who is the AL batting champ for for less than a proven ML SP … not something the Padres have to offer.

Seidler is no longer dipping his foot in the pool, he is diving in head first. I would expect another bat if Grisham is traded AND at least one more SP, if not two.

SD is not getting caught flat footed this season with pitching like 2022.
