2023 offseason

Drury age 30, limited to the INF, and has a 2022 SD line of .237 BA/.276 OBP/ .474 SLG, with 6 2Bs and 7 HRs with 24 RBIs in 123 PA.
Myers age 31, can play both 1B and OF, and has 2022 line of .253 BA/ .303 OBP / .365 SLG with 14 2Bs and 4 HRs with 31 RBIs in 254 PA.
We know Myers is NOT getting a monster payday after his time in SD.
So if Drury is $8M+, and Myers would resign for around $7M, is Drury the better option, or Myers, or player TBD??
Drury SLG and tendency to get runners home (RBIs) is way more valuable than Myers.. way more... Myers (however) on a 1 yr $3 mil or so (bench role ) and bounce back gamble on his part for FA 2024 might be a thing...then again he may want to do that in Cincy where he could hit 35+ bombs..
I would worry about what we are seeing in 2022 is a one off on Drury. Has not been this good during his career ... mostly below average in wRC+ ... career at 94. Myers' career at 109.
Plus Myers does grade out better defensively than Drury at 1B and is a better baserunner. Think he will get from some team an $8MM deal (one year). Drury probably less given his history and potentially Drury may want to go to a team that will let him start at 3B ... arguably his best position. Hard to see Drury getting more that a one year deal.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 19, 2022, 9:27 pmSo carried over from the Martinez thread, were Fenn was mentioning available dollars for 2023, and with all 3 options being exercised, this is the numbers I come up with, by using Sportrac.com
2023 Contracts - $139M, 2023 Arb Cases - $54M, 2023 Dead Monies - $12.3M, and various MiLB/Other Funds - $18.75M. Total - $224M, leaving just about $9M to avoid going over CBT of $233M. I do think that SD will go over the CBT, to fill a couple of spots
So lets say that Tatis goes to LF, that leaves $9M to fill 1B, DH, a bench spot, and 1 SP, unless you think 6 man, and that Morejon, Groome, or Weathers can handle a SP role.
So lets say, we bring in Zach Davies at $2M, will Myers come back at $5M, that leaves $2M for 2 additional bench players.
And no, I dont think that is Campusano. I think he is a 4A player, and not a piece for a play offer contender.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 22, 2022, 6:32 amI am liking a Tatis LF/ Azocar CF/ Soto RF OF for 2023... Profar (opt in?) and Grish off the bench ... Tatis in LF allows his shoulder a full season extra to heal beyond 💯... and takes the defensive pressures of SS so he can get his Offensive game in order... can he start at SS here and there sure... But that OF would have +++ speed
Allows Machado/Kim/Crone/XXX? IF..
If this is the plan Grish (still a top 15 overall CF) could very well be a trade chip for a position player that better fits us... Grish CF for Garrett Cooper 1B.. might be a trade worth exploring in the offseason for both the CF hungry Marlins and the 1B opening Padres...

This is placing a whole lot of faith in Azocar. I would not trade Grish quite yet.

Quote from fenn68 on September 22, 2022, 9:29 amDoubt Grisham (by himself) would get much in a trade ... nothing that would help the Padres in 2023. So, for now, would hold on to Grisham.
- Cheap ... first arb and after this season probably lucky to get $1MM and has 3 years of control.
- Padres need an OF for 162 games ... injuries / slumps will occur ... CF is clearly not well backed up ... and only Azocar and Grisham are experienced CF ... nothing in the minors for 2023.
- If Profar opts out, Padres have Soto, Azocar, and Grisham ... then a prayer. (note that Profar likely opts in so 4 OF). Then a BIG IF concerning Tatis ... will the go to the OF? will he actually be good in the OF? When he be eligible to play? How many games before he is on the IL?
- I like Azocar but we are still in the "small sample size" period and having an experienced back-up (platoon) player ready to step in is important.
IF Grisham went in a trade (with others) and part of the return is quality CF ... that is different ... but unlikely.

Note: It appears Groome will now be a solid candidate for the Padres rotation next season, especially if Manaea and Clevinger opt for FA. Groome has smoothed his delivery and found command of his slider and changeup. He also commands his FB and is able to hit all four quadrants. And he has just enough (93-95) to make it work with his long stride (6-foot-6). He's still only 24 years old.
Note II: The thinking is now that Dixon's video game numbers might be enough to earn Padres Minor League Player of the Year. The La Jolla native is 30 years old, doesn't have a set position (1B, 3B, RF), and missed half the season with a wrist injury. But the numbers between ACL Padres (1 game), San Antonio (25 games), and El Paso (23 games) are amazing.
Total games: 49
Average: .379
Hits: 72
Doubles: 15
Triples: 2
Home Runs: 22
Runs scored: 47
RBIs: 71
OBP: .448
OPS: 1.274Dixon was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Arizona. He made his MLB debut with Cincinnati in 2018, then played most of the 2019 season with Detroit (hit 15 home runs for the Tigers). He played last year in Japan before signing a minor league contract with the Padres in March
Dixon could be our Joey Meneses in 2023.. La Jolla kid too.. so local boy story line.. he did have 15 HRs with Tigers in his only MLB extended play.. so maybe he can be 2023 version of Drury at minimum $$
💯 a resign and ST invite for 2023.. Just at a quick glance he is BB at 2x his previous rate (JPN tends to help some hitters with this) AND is SO at 60% of his previous levels.. He has always had that Power to his game.. So I feel comfortable with a Voit 22 type floor and a Drury 22 type ceiling as our 1B /DH option... if we can also bring back one of Drury/Bell/Myers at reasonable $$ we could have a very flexible team with plenty of pop (Tatis back) up and down the lineup..
Groome stepped up big time in a pressure situation and pitched the best game EP has seen in a while.. I also feel comfortable with him starting the yr as #5 or #6.. perhaps the offseason shapes like this 1- (Resign Clev or equivalent FA) 2- sign a SP like Davies (cheap SP depth) and let Grrome/Martinez/Wethers/Avila fight it out for a SP spot.. loser to the BP/emergency SP role.. the rest AAA/MLB taxi squad

- 225 .317 .416 .733 Voit as a Padre 2022
- 248 .291 .435 .725 Brandon Dixon 2019 in his lone extensive MLB exposure season
- 196 .309 .288 .597 Josh Bell as a Padre 2022
- 220 .258 .439 .697 Drury as a Padre 2022
Just thinking out loud but a MLB minimum contract to keep Dixon and give him a shot at 1B/DH.. bring back one of Drury or Myers and save a ton of $$ for a SP... Tatis and a full season of Soto alone will bring a huge improvement.. to 2023

Quote from fenn68 on September 23, 2022, 4:40 pmI could be very interesting who the Padres add for the 40 man roster for the winter ... especially position players.
Even with Profar opting in (as I suspect) they still have Myers, Drury, and Bell as FA and some really fringe players on the 40 man in Sullivan, Liberato and Battan. Add to that there are no "prospects" who are locks to be protected. No guarantee that any of the three FA will resign with the Padres if the Padres want them back but not at their price.
And since they can DFA any of the fringe players if room is needed for a FA signing later ... would seem prudent to add (assuming the Padres actually see some ML potential) Dixon and Hollis. Even if they spend 2023 in EP ... they may be the better choices for call-ups during 2023 as needed.
Just guessing given the greater uncertainty with pitching ... the Padres will overstock the 40 man with pitchers and because of that go shorter on position players ... so, that could put a tough call on which position player is on the roster.

Quote from fenn68 on September 23, 2022, 4:53 pmI wonder how Campusano alters the 2023 moves. He is getting his ML bat and catching showcased down the stretch ... in part due the injury / slump of Alfaro. IF they like him enough to be the second catcher ... could move on from Alfaro (and save some money). IF they are not sold on his catching but like his bat ... is there a chance he starts getting time at 1B/DH ... lessening the need for adding a FA bat.
Somewhat in the same vein ... not sure what they think of Rosario for 2023. Not going to be a starter but do they project him as a decent back-up INF and potential DH/part-time player (maybe allowing Cronenworth slide to 1B/DH as needed).

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 24, 2022, 4:28 amThink Pedro Avila has pitched himself into 2023 shot at SP
And personally I would start him over Manea on W or F .. Avila is on same scheduled as Sean atm.. and EP looks to clinch today or tomorrow.. so he can stay on schedule and P for us
29 7-2 4.62 111.0 122 1.32
Think Pedro Avila ..needs to take the rock for Manea's last Start.. he pitched great last night in a pressure filled game at AAA..and unlike Groome who also pitched great the night before Avila has mlb experience (including a handful of Innings in April this year )and misses bats.
