2023 offseason
Quote from sportwarrior on December 7, 2022, 1:33 pmQuote from JasonE135 on December 7, 2022, 1:29 pmWe are actually lucky that Tatis does not have a set position at this point. We have been able to pursue Judge for the OF, Bogaerts for the IF and Turner for either. I am still hoping for Bogaerts for 2B myself. I do not want Tatis back on the dirt and Bogaerts and Correa are the best bats left on the market. Bogaerts would be cheaper and provide worse defense, which is fine for 2B. After them comes Nimmo whose signing would push Tatis back to SS. I expect that Preller is in on at least 2 if not all 3 of those guys. We can possibly get both Bogaerts and Senga for less total money than we offered for Judge alone. That is what I am hoping for at this point.
It really doesn't feel as though Boegarts is an objective at this point. Plus, he and his agent have been pretty adamant that he won't agree to any sort of position change. He sees himself as a shortstop, and it'd be a dealbreaker for any team to insist otherwise.
That said, if the Padres were truly interested, they could slot him at SS, Kim at 2b, and Tatis in LF/CF. Then, if Manny were to opt out and leave next year, they could revisit positioning and maybe convince him to slide to 3b.

Boras has said he will play anywhere as long as he's being paid SS money

Got Lopez in Rule V.. this dude has a chance to be "electric" out of the BP.. 14+k/9.. is ELITE... the BBs are an issue.. cant believe a team like the A's didn't go all in on him.. if Niebla gets those BBs/9 down to 3.5 or so.. Watch Out!
Padres select LHP Jose Lopez from Tampa Bay’s AAA roster in the Rule 5 Draft.

Then there is lefty Lopez 99+ heat 14k/9 BUT 5.8 BB/9.. still high heat lefties with a lot of swing and miss are super interesting to me... likely gets taken top 5 in Rule V though..our pick is #21
Nice call. They took Lopez.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 7, 2022, 2:20 pmWhole draft done in under 15 minutes. The Phillies taking Noah Song is kind of interesting. I remember he was supposed to be a top pick talent wise when he was drafted out of the Naval Academy. He ended up going in the 4th and couldn't get out of his service commitment, so he basically hasn't pitched since.

Not necessarily, IF SD was to sign either Nimmo or Benintendi, Tatis could still stay in the OF, replacing Grisham. Yes, Grisham has a great glove, but his bat has been trending the wrong way. Plus there was a trade rumor of Grisham for a LHH 2B from MIN, Arraez who I believe lead the AL last season in BA. And that would allow Crone to slide to 1B, and add high level LHH bat, which I think SD needs.
So you could possible have Benintendi in LF, Tatis in CF, and Soto in RF. Or, Nimmo in RF, Tatis in CF, and Soto in LF. Either way, Tatis can stay in the grass.

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 2:31 pmWell the Padres did take a player in Rule 5 … Jose Lopez LHRP from TB with a mid-90s FB and a good slider … AAA last season. Big K%. Control has been the issue but clearly worth a look (especially if there is some lingering concern with the health of Pomeranz and Castillo while they target Morejon for SP.

According baseball reference, he only had 2 IP in AAA last season. And 2 IP in A, so the majority of his numbers came from AA. Which is fine, there have been many pitchers that have made the jump from AA to ML with a high level of success. I believe Peavy pretty much skipped AAA if I remember correctly.
95 Ks in 59 IP, is good swing and miss stuff, hopefully like you said, Niebla can get him straightened out.

Signing Nimmo would not necessarily push Tatis back to SS.
Nimmo could push Grisham to 4th outfielder/defensive replacement/pinch bunter.
😉
