2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 10:35 amQuote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 10:18 amTwo more signings,
Contreras to STL for $17.5M per season for 5 years. $87.5M.
But the more disturbing signing is OAK signing Aledmys Diaz $7M per year for two years. He is a very middle of the road player, mind you with a lot of playoff experience, for $7M per season. Maybe OAK had to overpay a little to convince someone to come to the wasteland of baseball. However that should drive up the costs of players like Drury, Myers, etc., borderline starters/bench players to close to the $10M+ per season.
Yeh, combine the Diaz signing with the huge Bellinger signing and any decent role player will be over $10MM and/or a multi-year deal. Not ideal when the Padres needs two bats and an upgraded bench.
Only can hope at least some serviceable bench pieces are unsigned in ST and are desperate to find a job.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 7, 2022, 11:14 amI'd take a flyer on Nunez (Pirates) or Canzone (Dbacks) in Rule V.. while is rare for positition players to "stick" these 2 have the raw power and in Nunez case the low K rate good eye 1B profiles that may keep em in the roster all season if not make them a reg contributor....
Then there is lefty Lopez 99+ heat 14k/9 BUT 5.8 BB/9.. still high heat lefties with a lot of swing and miss are super interesting to me... likely gets taken top 5 in Rule V though..our pick is #21

Quote from sportwarrior on December 7, 2022, 12:01 pm"Momentum" between the Red Sox and Boegarts. It really doesn't sound like we were going to pivot his way, anyway, but I'm not really sure what the alternatives are at this point for significant upgrades.
It feels as though this management is always willing to spend/overspend on "their guys," but that they aren't willing to generally overspend on players. That's why it feels far likelier that, should we miss out on Senga, we target a menagerie of reclamation projects than it does overpay for a Bassett or Eovaldi. Same goes on offense, unfortunately.

Quote from sportwarrior on December 7, 2022, 12:02 pmAlso, I'd like to go on record that I'm rather disappointed we didn't target Haniger. 3/43 feels fairly solid for him considering his upside.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 7, 2022, 12:05 pmI was thinking about that. Even if we do bring in one of the big bats left our bench is still going to be weak. Maybe there's a rule 5 guy out there that can bring more than the likes of Dixon, Azocar, Rosario, and the rest.

Although not likely the Padres select in the ML phase of Rule 5 … if the “right” guy falls to them they may take a flyer … they have the open roster slots to select and take a look/see … can send him back in ST. What makes me consider that as a gamble is that they don’t really have a bench now (besides not having the two hitters) and a Rule 5 position player might compete (if he is the right fit).
Maybe a defensive / speedster would be an asset … would expect the bat to struggle but now Batten? Rosario? Dixon? Sullivan? … expect all them to struggle at the ML level too.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 7, 2022, 12:22 pmQuote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 6:52 amThe largest offer to Turner, and a "significant" offer to Judge. It looks like SD has the money to get anyone that chooses SDs money.
IF Senga can translate his success to MLB, he would be great, just dont think he is going to choose SD. Rodon might be the better option over Senga, has had ML success, although he will come with a bigger price tag, draft pick penalties, and did have some health issues.
Nimmo makes me a little nervous, in his 7 seasons in the ML, he only has 3 seasons were he has played a majority of the games. I believe he has had injury issues, neck if I remember correctly. Even though Nimmo has more defensive versatility, I think I would prefer Benintendi, I think you can count on him more to be able to play.
Still think we get Benintendi, Quintana, and some bench help. Maybe Myers and someone like Villar, Gregorius, or Marwin Gonzalez. A professional back up MIF.
Quintana gone to the Mets

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 12:32 pmThe way the FA market is thinning out … might make sense for the Padres to really push hard for Senga (mid-rotation SP) and Yoshida (LHH OF/DH with contact skills) … not only addresses two needs but could provide more revenue to the Padres with the following the Padres would have in Japan. Maybe that covers any overpay.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 1:08 pmI know SD has already signed Dahl to a MiL deal, a bounce back candidate to be sure. However, I think I would take a look at one other LHH OFer as a bounce back candidate, Kole Calhoun. Slugging wise, he had a very good 2019 and 2020, then early in the season of 2021 had a fairly severe knee injury. He would be two years removed from that surgery, and should be a nice LHH slugging OFer that can play both LF and RF. I would not spend a lot on him, but could be a nice bench/platoon piece if healthy.
David Peralta could be a decent fall back option as well. He is 35 and will turn 36 during the season, and not what he used to be, but if he is cheap enough could be a nice platoon option along with Myers. Still hit RHP fairly well.
And still think that Gamel could be a nice bench piece as well.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 7, 2022, 1:29 pmWe are actually lucky that Tatis does not have a set position at this point. We have been able to pursue Judge for the OF, Bogaerts for the IF and Turner for either. I am still hoping for Bogaerts for 2B myself. I do not want Tatis back on the dirt and Bogaerts and Correa are the best bats left on the market. Bogaerts would be cheaper and provide worse defense, which is fine for 2B. After them comes Nimmo whose signing would push Tatis back to SS. I expect that Preller is in on at least 2 if not all 3 of those guys. We can possibly get both Bogaerts and Senga for less total money than we offered for Judge alone. That is what I am hoping for at this point.
