Depending on contract demands, could be a good back plan up to Benintendi.

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 8:12 amThe Judge signing has likely jumped the price tag on
1. Nimmo the best remaining OF option … NYY in the mix wanting a LHH and SF in the mix having wanted to leave the winter meetings with two OF (they got Haniger). Others are also in the hunt.
2. Bogaerts … with NYY getting Judge greater pressure on BOST to not let Bogaerts get away …
—————-
NYY apparently really are in on a LHH OF be it Nimmo or Benintendi or Yoshida … so not likely a bargain yet in play for the Padres.

I dont think Padres are looking for bargains to be honest... they are outbiding everyone

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 7, 2022, 9:04 amQuote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 7:59 amI was thinking, a dangerous thing for sure ;-), how about instead of spending big money on a Correa or Bogaerts, why dont we take some of that money and renegotiate and extend Soto, Machado, Kim, and Darvish. Then make the trade with MIN for Arraez/Grisham and then sign Benintendi, Brantley, and Vasquez. Trade Campusano for Berti.
An OF of Benintendi, Tatis, and Soto, and an INF of Machado, Kim, Arraez, Crone, with Vasquez behind the plate works for me.
Berti DH/Super Util, Benintendi, Machado, Soto, Tatis, Crone, Vasquez, Brantley, Kim sounds like a pretty solid batting order
I dont think spending Big on Judge or others is going to stop Peter for going after Othani and/or resigning/extending Soto and Manny.. Peter is printing money baby!

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 7, 2022, 9:06 amI mentioned Yoshida and Senga a few months back.. looks like that may actually have a high probability of happening now

They are outbidding everyone else (but not getting players to sign) for the mega stars / impact players. Not convinced that translates to overpaying for the next tier down of players. Siedler seems to be opening the check book for the elite ... maybe just the elite.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 7, 2022, 10:07 amLot of SP's have come off the board, but none named SENGA. I think this happens today and with the PADRES. It's been very quiet on the possibility of extending Darvish, so could this be another announcement. With the money being thrown around, Darvish has got to be at least in the mid to high 20's range despite his age, injury history and standing just short of a true ace. 3 years at 75M. If going to spend, then Correa and Nimmo should be the targets with Yoshida as a fall back.

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 10:17 amContreras signs with STL ... $87.5MM/5 ($17.5 AAV). At age 31 getting that 5th year for a catcher is likely the clincher.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 10:18 amTwo more signings,
Contreras to STL for $17.5M per season for 5 years. $87.5M.
But the more disturbing signing is OAK signing Aledmys Diaz $7M per year for two years. He is a very middle of the road player, mind you with a lot of playoff experience, for $7M per season. Maybe OAK had to overpay a little to convince someone to come to the wasteland of baseball. However that should drive up the costs of players like Drury, Myers, etc., borderline starters/bench players to close to the $10M+ per season.

A Darvish extension will be interesting ... probably not buy out this season but just add years at the end of the current deal. So in 2024 he will be 37 and would guess there will be a debate over a 2 year extension through age 38 (higher AAV) vs 3 years through age 39 (lower AAV but more total dollars).
Just a guess is that Darvish wants to pitch for some time but probably knows a FA at age 39 is not ideal unless he is at the top of his game ... might prefer the longer deal / lower AAV / larger total contract.
