While all the talk has been FA the "Trade" market has been really quiet during traditionally a busy period of 2 or 3 days.. have a feeling a couple of trades will be popping later today/night

LHH who can play all three OF slots ... only 28 ... so a good chance to catch on as a bench piece.

Hit RHP in his career ... not so much LHP. Not sure what happened to him as he ended his career in COLO (DFA'd) then struggled to stay in the ML with a couple of teams.

Given the total lack of OF support with the Padres (and in AAA) ... signing worth it.

more unsubstantiated rumors: Padres have discussed a deal with MINN that may include Grisham? only can speculate the piece they are after is Azzaez ... if so, Outside chance they want Kepler who is a plus defensive OF and a better hitter than Grisham (but only one year control at $8.5MM)

more would have to go to MINN if Azzaez is the player ... and since they are seeking SP ?????????? If Kepler, maybe the cheaper Grisham with 3 years control might be a play to open up payroll to let MINN spring big on Correa.

Also, if true, is that suggesting that Tatis to CF ... Azzaez to 2B ... Cronenworth to 1B ... and the next FA sign is a corner OF? OR Kepler to RF with Tatis in CF, Soto to LF and the next FA signing a 1B.

Not sure the Padres have enough to get both (considering MINN basically wants to build the ML roster and contend for the AL Central) ... maybe Morejon is in play with Grisham plus a bit more

I know 3 way trades are hard to work out, IF MIN misses out on the SS, how about a trade between SD, TAM, and MIN.

SD sends Kim to MIN, MIN sends prospects to TAM, and TAM sends Yandy Diaz to SD. Then in a separate trade, SD gets Berti for Rosario, and becomes a bench guy that can spell LF, 2B, 3B, and SS in a pinch, is basically a faster/cheaper Kim with less power, and better suited to being a bench player than Kim. And with the DH and Berti's utility, can still play 5-6 days a week.

SD puts Tatis back at SS, Crone stays at 2B, and Diaz takes 1B for SD. SD then spends the Turner money on signing Benintendi, Walker, and Quintana, and Berti helps fill out the bench.

Berti, Benintendi, Machado, Soto, Tatis, Crone, Diaz, Grisham, Nola.

Rotation would be Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Walker, Quintana, Martinez. Lets us utilize a 6 man rotation, or injury protection, and save innings for the playoffs.

I can't see how 2 time TJ Starter Clevinger who had a poor 2022 gets $12 mil and completely healthy Davies who had a better season gets less than half that.

30 teams / 30 GM / 30 different risk tolerances / 30 different player evaluations. Result significant differences in who they value and what they are willing to pay.

Guessing the CWS are taking the risk on health of Clevinger for the upside ... and probably a few other teams were also in the bidding. That boosted (in this market) the winning bid to $12MM (not something I would do).

Now if a team wanted that steady / available #5 that will post up every day ... they will pay for that reliability over upside ... so would not be surprised some team push him up to $8MM in this market UNLESS there is some lingering concern about his character and he is still lingering as a FA in ST.

It only takes one GM to pay the price.

I have Senga @$15.. Drury and Gallo at $6.. and Davies $5

Dude...No offense but what planet are you living on?

This is 2022 heading into 2023 and inflation has affected everything in this country including baseball salaries. Pitching is at a premium because you are only going to go as far as your pitching takes you....Senga will be equal to or greater than the contract that Joe Musgrove got...5 years at 100 million...Davies is looking at a contract at least in the 10-13 million per year range...look at what deGrom and Verlander got as top of the rotation starters. Gallo reminds me of Dave Kingman...either strike out or hit a bomb and by the way we had a guy here that everybody here (Not Me) wanted to get rid of so bad that had a 30-35 % strikeout rate but also would hit 25-35 bombs a year and played great outfield and had a hose for an arm and given what we need he would have been perfect...Hunter Renfro.

You want to trade / move not one but two gold glove finalists in Cronenworth and Kim which makes zero sense to me...leave the middle defense alone and put Tatis is RF for the following reasons...he has a great arm and is fast...he will continue to dive for balls in right field but having his glove hand on the foul line side is a better move because diving for a ball down the line is one of the first things a corner outfielder learns...he has nobody to back him up as opposed to diving towards center field that allows the CF to back up the play and the same goes for Soto in LF...glove hand to the line and shorter throws ( he doesn't have the arm Tatis has). The wrist injury that Tatis has is way more serious than people are letting on and I don't really expect much from him this year and Pomeranz is all but done...any innings from him would be a bonus but not counting on that happening...I've said it before and will say it again....DO NOT trade away young pitching on a fringe player that more than likely will not move the needle.

The Padres have a depleted farm system from way to many multiple player trades...4 for 1, 5 for 2 and at some point the farm system will need to develop players for down the road because spending BIG bucks is not sustainable with Darvish, Snell and Soto all becoming free agents in the near future and Machado has an opt out and if they walk then there is very little to plug in...a teardown of this team would be like what the Marlins did after they won a world series.

guessing contracts with years and amount is nothing more than an exercise in PFA (Pulled from Air) as we have already seen...Clevinger at 12 million is a prime example of a system gone wild.

I would like to see Meyers back at something fair for both sides...DH/1B/ COF....Drury because he is versatile...1B/2B/3b/DH....Bell adds the Switch-hitting component but is limited to 1B/DH only...all three are good clubhouse guys and that matters...Gallo is a hard pass, Reynolds from Pittsburgh would be great but at what cost and only if he agrees to an extension...I could go on and on but I have to brush up on the rule book for baseball...going to put the gear back on and umpire high school baseball this year...calling the plate is the best seat in the house 🙂

Clevinger has never won a CY. He's never even been an All-Star. You're right that he has significantly more upside than Davies though.

Don't know why I thought he did.. ??

Judge teasing us now wtf

He is in SD for winter meetings with almost no chance it has anything to do with the Padres

Personally I have Kim off the trade market ... if they give SS to Tatis and he gets injured (history suggests that is a reasonable concern) the Padres have no backup quality worthy of a contender. Cronenworth can be put there but defensively no longer a SS and that just opens a different hole with no back-up.

With two holes in the 9 man line-up need to add without trading incumbents.

Since SD was willing to offer Turner $342M that he turned down, why not add about $33M over the life of the contract and sign Judge for $375M. You could then pull off the Grisham trade for Arraez and go with an OF Soto, Tatis, Judge and an INF of Machado, Kim, Arraez, and Crone. If Kepler comes in the trade, he becomes bench help at that time.
