2023 offseason
Quote from MrPadre19 on December 5, 2022, 5:49 pmI don’t get the Vazquez talk.
Is he that much better than Nola?
I could understand Contreras and Murphy….but Vazquez is not a huge upgrade.
I mean…enough that we should make the effort when we need SP,1B,DH,OF?

Quote from fenn68 on December 5, 2022, 5:52 pmTeheran for $6MM and Martinez for $8MM … even if they deliver an ERA in the mid-4s … will be a steal.
Morejon - Groome have a chance at delivering near that level on the cheap … then don’t forget Avila and Knehr … the bar is low for a #5 SP.

Yeh, he is better … especially defensively and Melvin loves his defensive catchers plus with the new base stealing rules … defensive is more important.
For dWAR: Vazquez (+12.1) v Nola (-5.8) … big upgrade
Actually for hitting using wRC+: Vazquez (99) v Nola (89)
I suspect that neither is catching 162 (even without considering injury) and the combo would ensure a plus catcher for the full season. (Might signal some lack of confidence in Campusano for a pennant contender).
Maybe Campusano sticks around as DH/1B/insurance catcher … maybe he is a good trade chip. Hitting was always his calling card … catching was the issue.

Why are you interested in Jackie Bradley?
33 years old with a -1.7 WAR last season.
No Thanks
Wait…..Brantley?
Sorry Astros Brantley yes

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2022, 7:22 amWell in this MLBTR reports are that the Padres will NOT pursue any of the other top 3 SS after missing out on Turner who they valued for his singular skill set fit for what Preller wanted for the team. (Also don’t expect a pivot to Judge).
Apparently they will pursue a corner player … guess that means 1B but could be OF. Also a SP.
If the big money is not going for Turner at $30MMish (or any other big deal) … probably should see multiple “mid-range” signings just to strengthened the entire 26 man roster … that opens up a lot of routes for Preller to pursue.

I'd be happy with Brantley + Gallo + Drury + Senga (or Taillon type) + Davies for around $42 mil "combined".. gets me some lefty bats.. SP and Pop off the bench with GG Defense

Don't think we could get these 5 players for $42 mil
Senga----$17
Brantley----$12
Drury----$8
Gallo---$8
Davies---$14
That's $59 and my guesstimate and if anything I'm thinking I'm low
