Acee's latest says the Padres have at least expressed interest in Yuli Gurriel, Michael Brantley, Trey Mancini, Dominic Smith, Chris Bassitt and Jameson Taillon. He also says there is still some interest in bringing back Profar and Bell.

For the price that he is rumored to be getting, I would not be interested in bringing back Profar. I never thought he was really worth the $7M he was getting, and at a bigger price tag, it seems like those dollars could be use for a different type bat.

Profar screwed himself. If he really wanted to be here he would not have opted out. That contract was still very favorable to him.

What would the Padres give for Murphy / Brown … knowing other teams are also in the bidding and, frankly, OAK has no need to deal Brown given control / salary and would not expect both in a deal. So more likely a Murphy for:

Has to be prospects (and not Campusano since they have ready C prospects themselves). The turning around trading either Nola or Campusano is not going to yield a significant ML player to fill SP / needed two hitters.

So, Padres upgrade catcher but still have three holes to fill and have further cleared out prospect trade chips while adding payroll.

I have seen rumors that Brown may get moved, so I can see both. It would cost a lot, but SD is in that "all in mode". Would probably take Merrill, Lesko, Mears, Zavala, Rojas, and 1-2 others (and yes, not Campusano) to get both. But with their control/cost, IMO it would be worth it.

Tatis, Grisham, Soto is OF, Machado, Kim, Crone, and Brown INF, and Murphy C, then you only need to find a DH, unless you use DH for days off. That would be a very balanced line up L/R. Bring in Myers for a bench/platoon spot. Then maybe one more LH bench bat, for some balance, and injury cover.

So DH might be needed and that could be Brantley. Would still need 1 SP, and that could be filled by Quitana or Walker.

We would have nothing left to trade for the deadline or for injury.

Might want to consider the Boras factor who probably advised him that “worst case scenario” would still get him a better deal that the $10MM option year (may not agree and may debate what constitutes a better deal) … however a multi-year deal at a lower AAV might fit that because of the guaranteed money.

If the AAV came back down to the $7MM range … could see him re-signed for the super utility role with two hitters needed at a minimum. Depends a bit on who the Padres can sign (or are willing to sign at market price). Profar was a positive in the clubhouse and apparently with management.

Same could be said of Drury … his AAV has to come down from the project $10MM+.

Verlander signs with the METS … 2 years / $86MM.

That may open up the pitching market and maybe take the METS out of signing more top FA arms.

And not with LAD. So a win/win for SD. Worry about the NYM in the playoffs again.

Although there will always be another prospect(s) that starts to shine during the season, and therefore adding another trade chip(s).

But you are totally correct. SD would be betting on no catastrophic injuries during the season. In theory, would not really need to trade for anyone with a line up of Tatis, Soto, Machado, Crone, Brantley, Murphy, Brown, not a lot of holes in that line up. And a rotation of Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Quintana/Walker, and Martinez. And a BP of Hader, Suarez, and hopefully a healthy Pomeranz.

Trea Turner to Phils

Trea Turner to Phils

$300MM / 11 years full no trade.

I don't want to give up the last of our "good" prospects for a Catcher...even with Brown added.

Get the SP and the 1b/DH without losing Merrill,Lesko AND Zavala....roll with Nola/Campy

I would think we could het Pablo Lopez and Jon Berti for  less than that package...and they would probably take Campy.

Then you just need a DH...(Brantley)

LF-Berti

RF-Soto

SS-Tatis

3B-Machado

DH-Brantley

1B-Cronenworth

2B-Kim

C-Nola

CF-Grisham

Darvish-Snell-Musgrove-Lopez-Martinez

Verlander and Turner, pieces are starting fall.

AJ is probably starting to feel left out.

11/$300

he’ll be 41 at contract end

I can’t imagine he will be very good at 38 with 3 more years to go.
