Always take “interested” with a grain of salt. Does not always mean Preller will try to sign them at anywhere near the asking price (or media projections). May be only fall back options if other priorities don’t pan out. Basically due diligence of trying to see where the player / agent currently stands. Even then, if the player is not getting other bidders at his price … may drop his ask into a more desirable range.

So, Profar at $12MM is a no … Profar (in this market with Padre needs) at $7MM yes. Might have to wait into January to get the player / agents to drop their price as the realize not getting bids for teams and ST in near.

What would the Padres give for Murphy / Brown … knowing other teams are also in the bidding and, frankly, OAK has no need to deal Brown given control / salary and would not expect both in a deal. So more likely a Murphy for:

Has to be prospects (and not Campusano since they have ready C prospects themselves). The turning around trading either Nola or Campusano is not going to yield a significant ML player to fill SP / needed two hitters.

So, Padres upgrade catcher but still have three holes to fill and have further cleared out prospect trade chips while adding payroll.

No to Drury especially for the price he is going to want. He is not a Petco bat. He had one good half season, in CIN a hitters paradise. His time in SD was under par.

Senga would be nice, SD is going to get outbid, and in a bigger city.

So Murphy, Brown, Myers, and Quintana.

Turner would be the pipe dream.

I have seen rumors that Brown may get moved, so I can see both. It would cost a lot, but SD is in that "all in mode". Would probably take Merrill, Lesko, Mears, Zavala, Rojas, and 1-2 others (and yes, not Campusano) to get both. But with their control/cost, IMO it would be worth it.

Tatis, Grisham, Soto is OF, Machado, Kim, Crone, and Brown INF, and Murphy C, then you only need to find a DH, unless you use DH for days off. That would be a very balanced line up L/R. Bring in Myers for a bench/platoon spot. Then maybe one more LH bench bat, for some balance, and injury cover.

So DH might be needed and that could be Brantley. Would still need 1 SP, and that could be filled by Quitana or Walker.

Drury was our best hitter in the NLCS .. by a lot.. and I aint paying big bucks..more of a Brown/Drury platoon concept .. Drury at $10+ hard pass.. Drury at 3yrs @$5mil per lets go..
