2023 offseason
Quote from BoosterSD on December 1, 2022, 9:04 amSP market just got a little jolt to it, Matt Boyd (who hasnt pitched more than 100 innings in 2021 and 2022 combined) just signed with DET for 1 year at $10M, with bonuses up to another million.
So if Boyd can get $10M+, what are good reliable arms going to get. Prices might get higher than giraffe balls this offseason. SD might have blow by some of the CBT limits to field a winning team.

Combine that with the Clevinger signing and $10MM+ for questionable to bad SP candidates seems the market. Plus this was DETROIT spending. Makes the $6MM make good sign of Teheran by the Padres pure genius and making the re-signing of Martinez a "bargain".
No question the Padres will blow past the first CBT threshold and beginning to appear the second level will be breeched.
Teheran ($6MM if he makes it) plus two "average" hitters (at least $8MM each) will get the Padres right at the door step of the second tier even without upgrade the bench. So if the make any kind of push for one "better" add they are over the second threshold ... how far??????????

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 1, 2022, 10:37 amSome of these starters may be benefiting from signing early.
As we get closer to ST those unsigned may find that the teams willing to spend what it takes no longer can because of their desire to stay under the CBT.Of course they will find takers, but maybe not for as much more than the Clevs and Boyds of the world as you think.
Especially a guy like Bassitt. He's expecting $20 mil per but with the QO if he doesn't have a taker soon maybe he doesn't get what he's thinking he will.I like Bassitt fine...but not at the cost of 2 picks,$1 mil in Int. money and $20+ per. This is probably why the SP market has been slow to develop.Everyone waiting on Senga to sign first.I wouldn't think AJ would go after a SP with a QO until he knows he can't get Senga.

Easy
For some reason I'm not bullish on Rodon...esp. at the cost plus the QO penalties.
I may be the only one.... may be because the Padres beat him pretty handily last time out and it sticks in my head.
Rather pay the QO fees for Xander.

You do realize only Manny and Soto were better than Voit in 2022 as Padres with the bat right?

Quote from fenn68 on December 1, 2022, 12:44 pmNone of the above.
I will opt for the cheaper bundle with Senga - Brantley - Myers … still almost $35-40MM but with no long term commitments for Brantley / Myers and don’t have to take the hit on QO players. Brantley is a real professional hitter and LH … Myers provides good 1B defense with basically an average offense. Both (with a lower cost) should complement the big three and leave money for further upgrades as needed.
Not into given long term deals to the likes of Rodon and Bogaerts when potentially trying to extend Soto and Darvish. Also on Rodon … never like giving long term deals to a pitcher with an injury history (see Sale and many others). Maybe on a hitter but not “older” position players that are already 30ish whose decline could come sooner than a younger player in his twenties … less real productive years.
