2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 28, 2022, 11:33 amI can see a play for Rodon followed by a trade of Snell and another SP added..sort of extending Snell (but in this case replacing him .. rather then just letting him walk next yr)..ie Rodon replaces Snell going foward..Snell gets dealt for a decent return

1.Michael Brantley
2.Nathan Eovaldi
3.Martin Perez
4.Zach Davies
5.Joc Pederson
Was my guess from the get go....still hoping for it.
But,would also need a top SP signing if we "settle" for Brantley.
Senga/Brantley/Myers has been my recent battling cry.

Wouldn't mind ONE of Voit/Drury + Brantley ..combined probably < Abreu by himself.. and we could cover lefty/righty and (along with Tatis) all 3 holes LF/1B/DH in one way or another

Quote from fenn68 on November 28, 2022, 11:57 amSounds like Abreu will get 3 years at about a $20MM AAV ... that blows away most guesses ... especially the 3 years for a 36 year old limited to 1B/DH.

Yeah i don't know about this signing for that much $$ for a team that now appears likely to lose Verlander and Brantley.. between Montero + Abreu 3/90.. $30 mil added to the books per for 3..

Two things:
Snell will be getting paid $16.6MM for one year (only a $10MM AAV for the Padres) ... he would only be of interest to a contender who would not give up a key ML player and eat that payroll on a one year basis.
IF Rodon gets (and in this market likely will get near) his $35MM AAV ... Padres net UP in CBT $25MM to the edge of the second tier while still needing another SP and a couple of hitters. The consider the loss of draft picks / international money and locking them into being over the CBT for next year with the Arbs for Soto / Cronenworth even if you let Darvish go (which would again put them in a SP shortage). Does not seem a winning strategy for the Padres.
BUT if they did sign Rodon ... they keep Snell ... and really go for it in 2023 with a very strong starting 5.

Quote from fenn68 on November 28, 2022, 12:22 pmReports are that Stammen wants to continue to pitch ... I know most here are done with Stammen ... but there is a chance that he re-signs with the Padres (low contract) since he is really linked to the SD community and a major leader in the clubhouse. Melvin apparently really likes him as part of the team.
Not a great option but some consideration for his having the shoulder issue in 2022. 2021 was pretty good (88 innings / 3.06 ERA) for his role as a versatile early innings / multi innings option who historically can pitch a lot of innings out of the pen.
If Martinez is going to SP ... Stammen may be the best option to take Martinez' role of early / multi-inning / high usage arm. If so, in the domino game, adding back Stammen may allow the Padres to more confidently deal from a deep bullpen ... RP always in demand so could put Garcia, Crismatt, Pomeranz, Hill into the trade chip category as veterans.

Lets not forget he took one for the team in the finale and that really played a big part in the BP having an excellent postseason

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 28, 2022, 1:28 pmI've been a vocal critic of Stammen..that being said,if he's signed for a "very" reasonable 1 yr deal AND he stays away from high leverage situations.....I'd be OK with it.Certainly we have other spots to fill before a low leverage bullpen arm though.
