2023 offseason

If we count Tatis ... still 6 open 40 man slots. Just hard to imagine 6 FA adds or trades that add a net 6.

Contreras they may just have not seen him a rebounding enough to keep on the 40 man but if they can re-sign him to a minor league deal ... then 2023 does not as an option year and he (if he does well) could be added again to protect for 2024. Worked with Avila. If they DFA before he could have been claimed but by non-tendering him he becomes an immediate FA.

They were both terrible, but Bellinger was better than Grisham offensively almost across the board. Grisham is the better glove and I tend to believe in his bounce back potential more than Bellinger's. Grisham has never approached Bellinger's peak though. If he would sign a low base incentive laden deal I would gladly take a chance.

Dont overlook possible complications from the shoulder surgery he had. There may be a lot that's not being told about that.

OK (counting Tatis) the Padres have 6 open slots on the 40 man and only have 13 position players on the 40 man to fill the 13 slots on the 26 man. Apparently they have no non-roster options they wanted to protect from Rule 5 and no clear internal candidates to fill position player needs. Would seem the Padres are destined to add multiple position players for the 26 man (bumping others back to AAA).

Sullivan, Dixon, Batten, and Rosario all have options and can / will be optioned to make room for four ML adds. Then still room to add two pitchers with a menu of rostered SP with options. Preller has a lot of immediate flexibility for adds and in reality more given some of the players that would be in the minors are easy DFA candidates.

Now it appears to be getting FA to sign the issue (at a cost that fits the Padres budget).

As for trades, probably at the point where they can’t really deal position players (except the one that may be optioned) … they need position players. So, trades are looking unlikely but if so, the abundance of RP should be the chattel.

6 spots .. 2 probably to SP ..maybe 1 in 26...1 at AAA (with options ) perhaps.. Also Kohlwey and Hollis chose to stay and not become minor league FA so maybe they cover 2 spots or maybe not BUT they'll likely be amongst 1st call ups *adds to 40...should that need arise... So 2 FA SP and 2 Bats + 2 minor league (AAA types that could contribute in a pinch)... So maybe 1 tier 2 FA SP.. think Senga/Taillon/Walker.. one lesser Davies type.. 1 $12-$15 mil bat (Abreu?) ONE $5-$6 mil bat... total for the 4 adds would put us at around $260-$265

I can't imagine a winter Meetings in 2 weeks without an AJP trade or 2 either.. and at least one of the "Whoa I didn't see that coming variety"...

They can also go the thrifty "gradual" approach and add 1) Senga $15.. 2)Voit $4.5 3) Candelario /$5 4) Strahm $3.5 + 2 minimum adds

1-5 5.22

7-5 2.19

So top # is Snell 1st half

Bottom # is Snell 2nd half

Could AJP trade Snellzilla at the Winter Meetings? Padres only need to replace Snell 1st half ..cause they can make a play at the Deadline for a SP.. or if someone steps up and say gives us 3-3 4.25 1st half.. maybe can just cover 2nd half with less dominance and more consistency thoughout..same net outcome as far as team W-L during entire season..

Senga (or the like) a must add "before" such move... But (with an eye on 2024 and almost 0 chance Snell comes back) why not maximize Snell at a pretty high trade value considering Lowish $$ and dominance since mid July..???

ORIOLES.. make a ton of sense for Snell ..new ballpark is a Beast to hit HR at..Snell could be truly dominant for them.. we could use a guy like Santender (switch) as a middle of the order bat.. Snell has a more "proven" record vs Santander .. but Snatander's avg 162 for his career would still give us an upgrade over Profar at the plate..and a big improvement at DH over 2022 ..

Blue Jays - C Danny Jansen for Snell type move .. while not a hole..our C situation could be upgraded..Campy could cover DH duties as could Jansen.. Jansen has reverse splits for his career hitting RHP > than LHP..and Jansen low key is an OPS king..dude Slugs .. having 3 C in a 13 position roster is not ideal. BUT if DH/C and some versatility at 1B (Campy)/2B (Nola) in an emergency cab be accounted for then I am all for it.. keeps the C position fresh and healthier as well..

Brewers - Burnes or Woodruff for Snell +++.. this one would be more of a P for P exchange with us attaching a spec package for the extra yr of control.. the package wouldn't be as painful (aka no Merrill) but likely would cost us Snelling or Zavala + a BP arm as well.. BUT sort of getting ahead on 2024 by securing another SP beyond 23..Brewers can't keep both SP with escalating $$ in arb in 23 and 24 for the thrifty Brewers..also based on some of their recent moves bolstering their BP ..they likely want to remain in contention so having Snell for the yr helps them achieve that goal while getting rid of future financial obligations down the line..

Again only make such a move if I add a Senga type SP and have a 2nd one (cheaper option )on the queue..

I could see the Padres leaving a couple of slots open for ST moves … either non-roster invites or FA ML players who have not been signed as yet or a waiver claim. More the bench types. Would have to consider that a lot of targets probably are not going to sign early and if they get hung out to dry could be bargains in ST.

If they see the top needs two bats and a SP … might want to resolve (and evaluate skill sets) those first to make better decisions on the money and skill set aimed at the final three.

A strategic issue for Preller is timing to get a legit SP … with a lot of teams looking for SP no guarantee the FA picks the Padres (baring an overpay). Senga - Walker - Taillon could drag this on but if Preller waits for just one the other two may be gone and the one signs elsewhere … big problem for the Padres.

Does Preller treat them and interchangeable … set a price for each … sign the one that is willing to sign first at his price? All seem to be in the same price range.

Secondly, for the projected $5MM … should sign Rucinski who is an innings eater for #5/6 (worst case) as protection if signing the top three falls through.

Padres made the playoffs without Tatis and a full season Soto … so should be better right now with even minor offensive adds and the #4/#5 only has to be the same as Clevinger / Manaea (not the highest hurdle) to keep the Padres in contention.

I expect Abreu would cost 16-20m. Maybe Seidler is ready to go full Cohen.

I think 3/42 ..2/30..  1/17... gets Abreu...

Senga + Abreu would be absolute 🔥... I wouldn't even care who the other 4 40 man spots go to at that point...

Tatis/Soto/Manny/Abreu/Crone vs Lefties
