2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 7:55 amAgree that looking at 2024 payroll / roster is a part of the decision on any multi-year deals being handed out this winter.
Snell - Hader - Garcia - Pomeranz - Alfaro became FA besides Darvish. In total that could clear near $60 MM. Offsetting that in part is what should be a very good ARB increase for Soto and some more minor ARBs for Cronenworth, Grisham, Nola.
So, IF they believe they can replace those players (at least most) with internal league minimum options … some room to stay under the CBT threshold while re-signing Darvish and maybe secure some hitters for #8-9.
At some point the Padres need a few more league minimum players to secure full time roles or at least some low cost options.

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 8:08 amOn one hand, given two openings in the line-up and quality internal options, adding a $5.4MM Diaz seems to fill a need at a lower cost than what would be an equivalent FA.
On the other hand, I don’t see the Padres having the prospects to get him out of TB if the Padres exclude their elite … Merrill, Zavala, et al. Other teams will also be bidding and doubt TB will panic to deal him even at $5.4MM.
TB will want prospects … no idea if Rosario or Knehr (if they will take a 40 man roster type) would appeal but more likely some non-roster pieces such as Wolf. Is that prospect quality enough?

Quote from BoosterSD on November 16, 2022, 8:10 amSEA has just acquired Teoscar Hernandez from TOR, for Erik Swanson a ML RP that had a good season last year, and Adam Macko, SEA #8 prospect according to MLB.com. Hernandez had more HRs and RBIs than Diaz last season, Diaz has a slightly better BA and much better OBP than Hernandez, and Hernandez is in arbitration as well. Hernandez arb estimate is $14.1M and Diaz $5.4M.
This could give us a baseline for what it would take to get Diaz from TAM. Probably a little bit more, since Diaz is cheaper and the Rays are a PITA when it comes to trade negotiations. So a ML RP, #8-10 ranked prospect, and probably one more piece going to TAM.

So maybe Wilson, Knehr, and a non-roster mid-range prospect? Three low cost long control options … and TB likes to stockpile pitching.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 16, 2022, 8:22 amDiaz let off for most of 2022 so unless TB had runners on from the bottom of their line-up, which probably wasn't the case, not many opportunities. While he had very good stats as a leadoff hitter, he actually had higher OPS (in very very limited opportunities) batting 4th (1093) and 5th (865) this year and 6th (1150) last year. I think Diaz is a good enough hitter to hit 5th; I'd switch Croney with Soto in the lineup and I'm assuming we sign a decent LH bat at a reasonable rate to plug into the everyday lineup that also would include Kim and Grisham (hope he at least can hit around .250) and the catching slot.

Diaz in the 5 spot definitely lengthens the line up a bit, so I like that. The reason I would hit Soto 4th, would put him in more of an RBI spot, and if/when his power returns, would be a better RBI guy than Crone. Plus, with Tatis on the bases, Crone should see more fastballs, which I think he handles better than the off speed stuff, and Soto can handle the off speed stuff better than Crone.
But that is minor differences.
Who do you think that decent LH bat would be??? And where does he play?

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 8:49 amI guess if they landed Diaz and dropped him at 1B ... probably would look to a LHH OF since as of now the opening day 40 man really only has Soto - Grisham - Azocar ... nothing really in AAA.
Tatis arrives a few weeks in but OF still thin if any injury occurs. Plus if they add a hitter who can also play OF the have a better opportunity for players to get "rest days" and to cover injuries ... knowing that if serious Tatis could go to the INF.
Not all that confident in the bench handling an extended role as a starter if needed by injury but with some position flexibility they could mix and match bench pieces for the best match-ups.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 16, 2022, 8:52 amIf we can't sign that #4 SP we have targeted, I'd swing back to the offense and try to get Benintendi as the LH bat. Not a power guy, but can keep the chain moving and plays a decent LF defense. Would give more flexibility than Bell, allowing the Padres to use the DH slot as a rotational spot from on the field activity.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 16, 2022, 8:55 amSoto has to be top 2 in the lineup with his Ted Williams eye at the plate.
I also hate the idea of Tatis leading off…..so I still want an add that can lead off…moving everyone down
My ideal top 5 would be:
1.New guy(Diaz or other high OBP guy)
2.Soto
3.Tatis
4.Machado
5.Cronenworth (or LF/DH add)
If the Phillies can make the WS with Kyle Schwarber leading off Diaz can lead off for us.
Diaz’s defense is pretty good at 1b….so put him there and add a LHH OF/DH to hit 5th and move Crone to 6th.

Was basically just typing the same thing.
