Checked my roster vs the Padres’ website … we are in sync with 35 (excluding Tatis) … so at 36 when he returns off suspension in April.

You are driving me crazy.. I just counted our 40 on Padres.com we are at 34 + Tatis..

Need to add in Martinez who is not on the Padres’ page yet (but signed).

The signing of Martinez at about $9MM AAV coupled with my pure guess of $30MM available before … gives me a working number for more adds around $21MM and that would take them into Tier 2 by about $4MM+/-.

Just not sure how to deploy that much (if it is really available) over one #4 SP and two offensive adds. Padres will have to gamble a bit on how to fill those three openings with at least one league minimum type to get better quality in the other two.

A non-tender of Alfaro only adds $3.6MM so helps but not major. Until I see it, not accepting that the Padres go much higher than $255MM in CBT.

OK it is in the pitchers … I have 22:

Avila - Baez - Castillo - Contreras - Cosgrove - Crismatt - Darvish - Filipe - Garcia - Groome - Hader - Hill - Kerr - Knehr - Martinez - Morejon - Musgrove - Pomeranz - Snell - Suarez - Weathers - Wilson

I still like acquiring Yandy Diaz from TB as long as it is not for top prospects.  Estimated to get 5.4M in arbitration, which could still be in the Padres' budget for a 1b man.  Great exit velocity (92.2) and Hard Hit %(49.6) that have increased each year for the past 3 years.  Given his K rate (10%) is lower than his BB rate (14%) and he has a career OBP of .373 (.401 in 2022) makes him a great fit for out line-up.  As long as it doesn't cost top prospects like Merrill, Zavala, Lizarraga and Lesko I can see this happening.  Just turned 31 but still has 2 years of control (23 & 24) before becoming a FA.

Contract for Martinez is very similar to Suarez in annual payout and actually lower without incentives.  Don't think he could have gotten much more elsewhere so he was wise to take it.  I think we'll see Senga sign sooner than later.  It may not be with the Padres but I think it will be after an extension is proposed and hopefully accepted by Darvish - that may be what is holding up some of the possible transactions as Preller wants to know what his budget may be in 2024 and 2025.  Darvish would be a bargain in the mid-20M range but not sure he would accept that number given what other starting pitchers of his age are getting and because he's still a top of the rotation starter.  This will be an interesting storyline to follow.

Martinez gets 10m in 23, 8m in 24 and 8m in 25. He can opt out after 23, but if he does the team has 16m options in 24 and 25 they can exercise to keep him.

So, from Martinez’ standpoint, he gets a 1 year / $10MM contract then 2 years of “insurance” at $8MM if he is just mediocre. If he is outstanding he opts out and the ball in in the Padres camp at $16MM per year.

So, a very good Martinez just got 3 years at $42MM ($14MM AAV)

A mediocre or bad Martinez just got 3 years at $26MM ($8.7MM AAV) … which is what goes into the books for CBT in 2023.

Very good deal for Martinez.

I dont know why Im having a hard time wrapping my head around Diaz being a good fit for SD. Maybe because his is a RHH? Maybe because he only drove in 57 runs last season? Maybe because I want more power (HRs) from a 1B? Maybe because I want more of a speedster leading off? Just not sure. I know he has an OBP around .380 for his career, but I dont like the idea of him leading off. I know I really like the idea of the batting line up going L-R-L-R look, and his RH bat keeps SD more lopsided than I would prefer.

Maybe a line up of Tatis, Crone, Machado, Soto, Diaz would make me feel a little better.
