He is back
Nick Martinez is going back to Padres days after opting out. Sides in agreement.

Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2022, 8:23 pmIt will be “interesting” to see the details of Martinez’ contract.
Still surprised that only Cosgrove was protected given all the open 40 man slots and the lower tier roster players that (in my mind) would be easy DFA if needed.
Wonder what that says about the prospects that were not protected … either the Padres don’t think they are worth protecting or that they just are fringe enough that they would not be selected (and kept).
So a lot of 40 man room but whether by trade or FA … adds for the 26 man probably max out at 4 but whomever gets bumped from the 26 man can be optioned (not many in that bubble cannot) and if via trade might be an offset by dealing a 40 man player.
I guess we will see where this goes as the winter progresses.

AJP could also have a waiver claim or 3 from players let go today.. or not all moves been reported yet... I dont see 30 teams moves ..only about 15 or so

Quote from Randy Manese on November 15, 2022, 9:52 pmWith the re-signing of Martinez to a 3 year contract, Padres are just 1 #4 starter away from completing their pitching staff. I can see a joint announcement where the Padres reveal a 3 year extension of Darvish and a 5 year contract for Senga (Darvish's off-season work-out buddy)- Japanese media would go crazy and, more importantly, Padres would be set for this season and several more to come. Also, gives adequate time to develop some of the top arms in the system - Lesko, Lizarraga and Snelling - besides those that could fill out the #6 starter/piggyback starter role, like Groome, Knehr, Morejon and a few other candidates.

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 1:23 amIf my numbers are right … with the signing of Martinez and the add of Cosgrove … the Padres have space for 4 net adds to the 40 man (and that incudes the return of Tatis from suspension). More than 4 and players need to be dropped.
Would expect that any adds also are ticketed for the 26 man pushing some current options back to the minors.
Shaping up for them to add only 1 more pitcher (hopefully a quality #4) then go with:
SP: Darvish; Musgrove: Snell: Martinez: +1 TBD
RHRP: Suarez; Garcia; Crismatt: Wilson
LHRP: Hader: Pomeranz: Hill: Morejon
Plus 10 arms in the minors. If they don’t sign another SP … probably a battle between Avila and Groome for the TBD slot.
If as expected they add two hitters minimum … likely two of Batten, Dixon, and Rosario get optioned to the minors. All three get optioned if they add three. As it stands only Sullivan is ticketed for the minors and with virtually no back-up in AAA non-roster … optioning three is a good thing. Should also a lot of AAA minor league signings with invites to ML camp to boost the AAA insurance.
So, (baring trades) four adds to 40/26 man rosters could result in one pitcher and three position players before DFAs start kicking-in. At the point where the 26 man is more an issue than the 40 man.

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 5:54 amHeyman is reporting that Martinez’ contract is 3 years / $26MM ($8.7MM AAV) with MANY EXTRAS. Which I interpret as a slate of incentives that could boost the total.
Martinez opted out of 3 years / $18MM … so he gained at least $8MM ($2.7MM/yr) … so he made the right call.

I have us at 34 (+ Tatis) /40.. so 5 spots ..but really 6 until 4/20 and that includes +1 in the 26 as someone would have to open the season as the 26th (likely back to AAA) guy when Nando comes back

Not sure on this technical point but don’t think they can use the slot on the 40 man that has been vacated by Tatis’ suspension. So, in essence it is a 39 man roster plus Tatis when he returns.
Sort of irrelevant since the 40 man has no issue with flexibility. The 26 is now the bigger question coupled with the payroll space left after the Martinez’ signing.
I have the Padres now about $3MM OVER the first threshold. So, considering the unknown of the money they plan to deploy, the debate likely surround going big on one FA or distribute more middle of the road on maybe three adds.

I have a feeling AJP is going to make a move or 3 by Thursday's non-tender deadline .could we find our 1B (Tellez/other) ..LF/DH (Renfroe/others) ..SP (Lauer/others) sorry being lazy and using Brewers arb guys.. in some trades by then..
Then maybe adding 1 mid bat and 1 tier 2 SP like Senga/Taillon/Walker.. maybe $30 mil left in the "Budget" with 2 position/ 1 bench / 1 or 2 SP spots left to complete the 26.. could save $6mil or so with Alfaro and Yu (extension)
We going to need some AAA position players with some mlb experience for depth
