2022 Season

Well Campusano's calling card coming up was his bat ... small ML sample size but building on that projection since he returned from the minors.
Guessing Alfaro is still having a bit of an issue with his knee (or maybe just has not really hit in the 2nd half) but Campusano is getting his reps behind the plate. No idea what the PADRES' front office thinks of his progression as a catcher.
He should be on the playoff roster ... the question then turns to 2023:
- Is his catching good enough to bump Alfaro as the second catcher? (would save payroll and potentially a better bat)
- Is his catching / hitting good enough to generate trade interest to fill a more needed slot in the line-up? (is this a bit of a showcase)
- Is the hitting good enough to warrant 3 catchers with Campusano / Nola getting time at DH/1B? (reduces the need to spend on FA for those roles)
Padres have viewed a lot more through the minor league season to make a base evaluation ... and just not clear as to their concerns with his work catching ... does not seem to be motivation / attitude / technical skills ... but something seems to give them pause.
If he fits into the 2023 plan ... saves payroll that can be deployed for slots without true internal options.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 30, 2022, 1:07 pmWe need to keep Campy and hope he pans out esp. offensively.
It's time to keep a couple prospects and play them everyday now that we've traded most away.
Need some more minimum cost players on the 25 man.....not many coming in the next 2 seasons.

Agree … have to take the gamble at some point on the prospects at league minimum if they want to sign (keep) some of the name bigger salary types.
Campusano - Rosario - Groome - some upside RP need to get mixed in and Morejon - Wilson need to step up.

Weathers is the biggest one that needs to step up. Im not sure if its confidence, got out of shape again, or what? But for being so dominant in the first half of 2021, and then to fall off the table. He needs to pick it up!

Quote from fenn68 on September 30, 2022, 3:40 pmGetting pretty frustrated with the lack of production from Bell and Soto. Also, a bit tired of some of the media excuse of the difficulty in adjusting to a new team / environment … Padres made the big trade at the deadline to WIN NOW and if taking two months to adjust is expected … why make the trade.
Bell first … Hosmer or Voit would have been more productive (and we are still paying Hosmer).
WASH: 375 AB … 301/384/493 … 14 HR / 57 RBI (2/3 of a season)
SD: 162 AB … 185/302/272 … 3 HR / 12 RBI (1/3 of a season)
Clearly zero impact in SD but even looking at his time in WASH the slash line is fine but his impact is low considering the RBI for a middle of the line-up bat. A $10MM player. Plus a DH only type … not make the case for signing back with SD.
Next Soto
WASH: 417 AB … 246/408/485 … 21 HR / 46 RBI
SD: 162 AB … 238/399/384 … 5 HR / 15 RBI
A $17MM guy expected to get an ARB in the mid-$20MM zone … lost all the power coming to SD BUT didn’t have real impact in either city … 61 RBI in a season for a generational hitter and a 45 RBI pace in SD is more than sub-optimal for his contract (and for what the Padres gave up). Also, despite his reputation as a hitter … note his BA in WASH … was his production already on the slide before the trade?
Bottom line is the Padres thought they were buying IMPACT to win in 2022 … and all they ended up with is two guys who can work a walk and die on base.
The deal was praised across the national media … clearly the Padres saw the fit … what did everyone miss? Sort of reminds be of the mega contract Jason Hayward got a few years back that was universally praised nationally that turned into a long term burden.

They actually have great synergy..and Campy is 💯 our best framer

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 4, 2022, 6:57 amDarren Smith put it out there that one or more of our Starters have let it be known that they refuse to pitch to Campy.
Hard to believe someone would say that even if they felt that way but......

Darren Smith has his contacts within the Padres’ organization and has been very careful about how he approaches the subject of Campusano and his future as a Padres’ catcher which seems “questionable” at best.
He did give Musgrove a lot of kudos for “volunteering” to have Campusano as his catcher down the stretch.
I have no idea what the issue is (and don’t want to speculate) but it does not seem to be his “technical” work behind the plate.
My guess is the front office is split on the future of Campusano for whatever the reasons … but his future probably solely rests with Preller and we are in a “test period” that either gets him in contention for a 2023 slot or is a “showcase period” to generate some trade value.
Just a head-scratching scenario around a Top 50 prospect as a catcher with a plus bat.
