By the way rosters expand to 28 +2 players 1P and 1 regular 9/1 .. who would u like to see up to help the club..?

On the P side Pomz/Johnson are the obvious adds... however Groome might be interesting

On the hitting side I would add Beaty and Campusano and option Batten down... Campy can C (Alfaros starts) and DH if need be.. Beaty can get some starts in LF/DH/1B a bit to get an extra LHB in a lineup here and there..

I can see Beaty up … LHH to balance Drury. Plus Drury can back-up 2B/3B making it easier to option Batten (who is not being used at all) and call up another player … just not sure who. If it is the bat they want … have to make a call between Campusano and Rosario … both have had their pluses and minuses this season in AAA but neither is really tearing it up. Rosario may give the better versatility (and maybe more in game power) but Campusano does provide the insurance for catcher.

Pitcher is more of an issue … first will Pomeranz and Johnson be ready to be activated on SEP 1 (or soon after)? If yes, and coupled with Darvish back on SAT forcing someone (Castillo) to be optioned … going to be difficult to make the call on the next player optioned. The players who can be optioned are actually preforming well at the ML level now and bumping one for the “unknown” of an arm returning from injury who may well be worse upon their return … not ideal.

I am expecting a new IL candidate or one of Pomeranz / Johnson NOT making it off the IL.

Not much consolation for a poor 30 day stretch by the Padres … but they went 14-14 and are hanging on the the last Wild Card slot thanks to MILW being worse at 12-14 over that timeframe. Most of the national types seem to think the wheels will continue to fall off MILW … Padres maybe “back into” the playoffs … then anything can happen if they get hot.

I guess the fan bases in a couple of other cities are feeling more angst over the past 30 days. First the NYY who were by some considered one of the best teams in MLB have gone 10-17 and lost the best record in the AL to Houston. MINN who was in the lead in the AL Central went 10-16 and has fallen behind CLEV by a few games … and out of the playoffs. Even BOST who made a run to at least get into striking distance of the playoffs went 11-16 and faded into the sunset.

Padres are not alone … that’s baseball.

Did any of those other teams really make any moves to better themselves though? The Padres are equalized despite going all in.

Yes many did.. All playoff teams made sone moves..none as wholesale or big as the Padres.. In a way AJP knew he was getting Tatis back and 💯 assumed adding Soto/Bell/Drury into the mix would catapult us to WS contenders.. we all know how the Tatis saga played out.. Do we still have a strong team YES.. But Tatis coupled with Bell and Drury going on semi slumps together (looks like both are breaking out) and our lead off hitter forgetting to get on base = THIS

Now is the time to right that ship.. and start getting HOT 🔥 together... and by NOW I mean NOW!

I doubt the fan bases care whether the teams did or didn’t make moves … either way it is clear to the fans the front office is incompetent if the team is fading. Either they did not make needed moves or the made moves that were just wrong.

Fans are always right … front office is always wrong when the teams lose. Actually the front office is often wrong when the team is winning (but not winning to fans expectations).

Is it just me or does Azocar seem much more confident at the plate vs earlier this year? Seems like he found something at AAA... has always had too many SO (20-24%) and too few walks (4-6%) in his performances but his BA has improved and if (since the recall) this lower SO (high teens) better AB's version is the new and improve Azocar.. maybe a platoon (vs lhp) 4th OFer type role going foward is his "FIT' with this team... Good solid pick up by AJP..

Agree … has enough defense and offense to be a legit ML 4th OF and enough speed for PR duties.

Nice minor league FA signing by Preller after the was released by Detroit(?). Late bloomer but still only 26 … fills a niche.

@fangraphs

In the realm of everything needs to be in context … most of us are frustrated by the lack of hitting with players in scoring position … and clearly the last few weeks have been extreme but over the season stats with players in scoring position:

BA … 257 ,,, 15th in MLB

OBP … 347 … 6th in MLB (still walking)

SLG … 429 … 11th in MLB (I am surprised)

OPS … 776 … 10th in MLB

A couple of thoughts … there are a lot of teams that have to be frustrating their fans more than the Padres and given these are year to date stats is it reasonable to think the current drought will end and revert to the mean? Hope!

—————————

On the flip side, Padres brought in Soto, Bell, and Drury … but are they what we hope?

Soto (ytd 79 AB): 190/373/342 (715) … yeh, no one want to pitch to him even with men in scoring position but is that what the Padres want (3 HR / 26 RBI) … his line is less than the Padres team average

Bell (ytd 124 AB): 250/353/387 (740) … still below the Padres’ team line and only 174/367/304 with the Padres by taking walks and minimal SLG

Both had outstanding overall stats prior to the trade but did those stats blind us to the “clutch” stats?

Drury (ytd 86 AB) on the other had was outstanding with runners in scoring position at 302/337/733 (1.070) unfortunately with the Padres 227/250/682 which still reflect some excellent SLG (base on a few HR) but his average dips below average.

Just some context.

In a curiosity … the best Padre ytd stat line belongs to Nomar Mazara in nearly 40 AB.

On the positive two of the worst (by a long shot) were Voit and Homser … so even Soto, Bell, and Drury are upgrades even while they struggle.
