2022 Season

Potential Achilles heal in ATL … the RP/Closer. Jansen blows another save last night as the closer (seems to have that same inconsistency we saw in his last years with LAD) and the other late innings guys have had similar issues.

There starters are excellent but if it is close at the end of the game … a chance to get them.

I just learned of Josh Hader's son born on June 15th ...

https://nypost.com/2022/06/21/josh-haders-wife-gives-birth-month-after-pregnancy-complications/

I remember how tough that first month+ was with firstborn ... and that was without any "complications" ... this seems like it's gotta be part of the root of his issues on the mound ...

That would certainly explain a lot!

Hopefully mummy and baby are both doing well.

Maybe put Hader on IR rest of the year? Tell him to go spend time with his family?

With 33 games left and up 3 in the Win column vs Brewers

If we go 17-16.. Brewers need to go 20-16 (they have 36 left).. and the Tie would still make us the #3 WC.. so really they need 21-15... if we go 19-14 they need to go 23-13...

Of note ..they have like 1 day off and like 24 games in 23 days or some crazy run like that (like we did in June but worse) and after that play Stlouis/NYY/NYM all in a row ..

We need to keep winning series ...and we will be ok...

I looks as though Soto’s stat line has turn to the good with the Padres and although batting 2nd, in theory, is the best spot for his OBP skill set … not getting the RBI level hoped for (3HR/6RBI) … although he is helping Machado have a great month.

The key issue is the #4 and #5 slots that seem to be going primarily to Bell and Drury … and they are both not producing anywhere near expected. It is they who have to make the return to form if the Padres want to make the playoffs and progress through the playoffs. The die is cast and no real alternatives other than ride them out and hope in the next 30 days they get back to form.

Profar, Grisham, Nola, Kim and Cronenworth are in the line-up but not middle of the order types … Myers is the only one with some middle of the line-up potential and we know that is a long shot.

Since in the playoffs don’t really need that 5th SP (so don’t worry about Manaea) and maybe not even the 4th (Clevinger in the pen?) … so pitching may be fine. However, a non-productive #4 and #5 hitter will get the line-up killed by playoff quality SP.

The season rides on Bell and Drury.

I'll be honest, the pick up of Drury was questionable. I knew his CIN would not play here in the NL West. So whatever we get from him IMO, is a bonus. Although none of us thought that he would be needed this high up in the line up. That is Tatis fault.

Bell is the biggest head scratcher. I dont believe that WAS home park plays in favor of hitters, so I did not think there would be such a let down with Bell's bat. Maybe his first playoff run is playing with his head, and he is pressing too hard.

Bell needs to unleash his brain, and bounce back.

Josh Bell is no longer the problem guys

.320 .433 .640 last 7 games

Drury is the one that needs to heat up... Bell back to clean up spot.. maybe let Jake hit 5 vs RHP..and 7th vs lhp.. Kim should lead off (Profar is super cold although he hit 2 of his last 3 balls in play very hard)

Drury last 7 games

.179 .179 .214

Only 1 RBI... vs 14 RBIs to start his Padres career.. still his 15 RBIs since the deadline are #1 for Padres

He needs to get that bat going

I might give Drury a day off and put Campy in at DH hitting 7th.. or Myers at DH..Myers is on 🔥!

Not sure on the rules of eligibility to be on the playoff roster. I pretty sure they have to submit a 26 man active roster before each series and that has to come form players on the 40 man roster on August 31 (just not sure how they handle the 60 day IL guys). Baring an injury … cannot make a mid-series change.

Don’t think any issue with not activating players without minor league options but not sure if there is any restriction on who can be activated (if on the 40 man).

That preamble leads me to … would (should) the Padres NOT activate Manaea and Hader if they continue to be ineffective and go instead with two currently (or potentially) more successful RP? Castillo and Groome or Baez?

Don’t see this as an issue with the offense.
