2022 Season

Schedule gets tough and if we don’t turn this offense around we will miss the playoffs.
Nevermind what will happen “in” the playoffs if we get there.
Yup and a 93% ump scorecard with 1 89 runs in favor of Clev dont help..Thats BRUTAL
I can’t wait for robo umps next season! Get the calls consistent with a stable strike zone. I am more than tired of the clear ump mistakes that take the game out of the hands of the players and change the course of the AB and the game by just altering the count that in turn changes the outcome of the AB.
Side benefit would be not continuing to hear the broadcasters continuing to run a negative commentary on bad ball/strike calls.

Interesting comment for one of the national types (think it was Smoltz) on the size of the robo strike zone. He contends that they not use whatever is the “rule book definition” and go with lowering the top of the zone. Basically, with the high velo pitchers … hitters cannot hit that high strike and currently benefit by umps not consistently calling it. If robo umps do call it consistently … pitchers will go there more often … hitters will not hit it … offense will go down.
Not an issue with going to robo umps … but an issue of designing the strike zone in a manner that achieves the objective of adding offense … not making worse.

Quote from fenn68 on August 24, 2022, 8:47 amListened to a discussion that suggested the Padres moved Soto to lead-off … given his high OBP to energize the line-up. Now that made little sense to me.
First, Padres got Soto to be an impact bat … drive in key runs. Put him in lead-off given the RBI capabilities of those following him just guarantees his 413 OBP will go up since doubt anyone will pitch to him … no one pitches to him now with Machado (big bat MVP candidate) hitting behind him. Padres still can’t score.
I look at it in the opposite way … drop him to #3 in the line-up with two OBP types ahead and SLG types behind him … basically bracket him “forcing” pitchers to pitch to him.
How about:
OBP / SLG … Player
1. 344 … 395 Profar (#)
2. 343 … 382 Cronenworth (L)
3. 413 … 484 Soto (L)
4. 371 … 526 Machado
5. 365 … 456 Bell (#)
6. 328 … 498 Drury
7. 330 … 375 Kim
8. 297 … 361 Grisham (L)
9. 325 … 322 Nola
basically you get the two best OBP at the top of the line-up the top SLG in the middle and just fill out the bottom. Sort of old school. The gutty part is that some are slumping but think the have to bite the bullet and gamble on rebounding … no sense that any of the replacements if used would do enough to carry the team.

I think this was the thinking at the deadline.. (Tatis)... I think for 2023
2 Soto
3 Manny
4 Tatis
Is the way to go..
I like your idea.. also like Nola (in the 2 hole) when he C.. and Jake behind Drury or ahead depending on match up
1. PROFAR/ 2 Nola/ 3 Soto/ 4 Manny/ 5 Bell/6 Drury /7 Crone/8 Kim/9 Grish/Azocar
Nola strikes out less vs Crone and Crone's >Pop would be more of a + down in the order

Quote from BoosterSD on August 24, 2022, 9:16 amI know last nights home plate ump had a rough game, but I personally think most of you on here are going to lose your Sh@t when you see some of the pitches that a robo ump will call a strike. If it nicks the zone, it will be a strike. Some of those curve balls last night from Civale that nick the front low part of the zone and get caught just of the top of the plate/ground level, WILL be called strikes.
But if you get what you all want, robo zone, dont come crying on this page.

As they should be since they crossed the hitting zone as a strike. People will always complain.
Sort of academic issue now with MLB embracing gambling as a money maker. Cannot afford to have "bad calls" costing betters money ... someone will get their knees broken.

I care more about consistency vs arbitrary calls... if I as a player know what the robo is going to call ... I can protect or be more aggressive.. if however a human is going to call a strike on a ball a foot off the zone I have a big problem with that...
? Does the robo ump get different "programing" from ballpark to ballpark or is it 💯 identical

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 24, 2022, 10:52 amYeah I just want a level playing field. I'm sure there will still be calls that I don't like, but I want the zone to be consistent for everyone.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 24, 2022, 11:01 amLooking at Home/Away splits...Manny kills it at Petco.. Profar and Nola do to.. 2022... Crone career at Petco is >Road ..BUT 2022 is NOT ..is actually quite bad vs Road splits which are good... Alfaro is awful at Petco... Kim not good (although he has improved by 100 OPS points).. Grish is pretty consistent with more power but less OBP at Petco....still bad .195 vs .194 BA though..
Bell/Drury/Soto too soon
For the record ..Drury .535 at Petco... Bell .790 and Soto 1.030 OPS ... Bell and Soto just 9/10 game sample size...

TBD ... guess it will be consistent park to park. More interesting will be if it is structured batter by batter ... maybe based on the listed hight? Will Altuve's strike zone be the same as Judge's? Or the same for all and let the hitters adapt. Otherwise it is the pitchers that have to adapt.
My guess they will take the data for the games in the minors this year vs. games without the robot ump and do an analysis over the winter to try to balance the impact on offense vs. defense. After that, size the strike zone for 2023. Nothing magical about what is in the rule book (umps are not following it now and the league has given directives to call up or down in the past).
At that point (probably every winter) they will have the opportunity to tinker to ensure the balance the want between offense and defense. Clearly top and bottom will be controlled but would not rule out modifying the inside / outside for "any part of the ball" to 50% of the ball (or something like that)
I see two objectives ... consistency for the players and insuring that they have the offense that they deem entertaining for the fans / and gamblers).

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 24, 2022, 11:16 amI’d prefer they take away the box for now.
Most of the missed calls are close enough to be called either way….but the constant “should have been a ball”/“shouldn’t have been a strike” commentary is getting old.
Without the box there would be no complaint about 80% of the missed calls.
