Quote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2022, 7:58 amQuote from WindsorUK on August 21, 2022, 9:05 amI want NOTHING to do with St. Louis! They OWN us....bring on Atlanta.....if we hold off Milwaukee????
We beat them in WC series in 2020
Maybe we’ve erased that ?

Already informed “my boss” if we have a game in Atl. I will be going at any cost.
But,I think getting through the Cards would be the easier route to winning at least the first round.
After that…..
Tbh If we get hot and start clicking with RISP I don't think any team is as scary as ours... we have made the adjustments *added big time power and SLG .. at the deadline .. if it clicks this offense is legit scary *even without FTJ... Just a matter of getting Hot and staying Hot when the time comes
I’d like to see it for more than one game in a row to believe it.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 22, 2022, 8:11 amI would imagine that no team is really looking forward to seeing SD in the playoffs. For all of our recent woes (offensively, and we can get hot at anytime) we are still a very good pitching/defense team, and that is what is successful in the playoffs.
Going through Musgrove, Snell, Darvish in a 5 or 7 games series is not going to be a easy task, and even Manaea has looked better in his last game.
We are 4-2 v ATL, 4-2 v NYM, 4-2 v MIL, 3-3 v PHI. And we can still finish 3-3 with STL, if we sweep them in SD, like they did to us in STL.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2022, 8:24 amProbably should worry about getting into the playoffs first (it is a close race) and just be indifferent to the Wild Card opponent on the road.
Having said that ... would love to avoid the opponent with the best first three SP given the Padres offensive struggles at this point. That looks like ATL ... so would lean towards STL in the first round.
ATL: Fried (2.63); Strider (2.95); Wright (3.14)
STL: Wainwright (3.11); Mikolas (3.32); Hudson (4.33)
for reference:
SD: Musgrove (2.91); Darvish (3.39); Clevinger (3.63); Snell (3.76 BUT dominant in the 2nd half .. 1.60)

Actually 3-4 vs Phillies..and some of those 4-2 are 4-3.. 0-3 vs St Louis with 3 to play.. we own all the tie breakers except Phillies and Cards..

And yet this is where I see our strength.. It doesnt matter if we face Max Scherzer ..Kershaw OR CORBIN we can score 2 (lol).. and are used to these type of games.. in the playoffs I don't think BoMel let's Snell/Yu/Mus..maybe Yu yes.. go more than 2x thru a lineup..and without checking I can almost be 💯 sure Mus/Yu and Snell are below 2 ERA 1st 2 times thru a lineup... very misleading stat when our SP goes longer IP vs any other out there... our lineup added Soto 20+ Bell on his way to 20+ Drury 20+ ..to Manny 20+ And still have 3 Profar /Crone/Grish with outside shot at 20... HR's .. Hell we could have 3 with 30+... makes it possible to win postseason games with one swing vs anyone ...For all the issues we are having with RISP . Sooner or later the baseball norms will start coming back in our favor and if anything thus team has the ability to score and score in bunches against anyone..
Perfect example Myers CS yesterday.. if he doesnt run.rum.. Manny single that followed makes it 1st and 3rd and Drury's single after that makes it 1-0.. and 1-1 with RISP.. we ran ourselves out of at least 1 run there..

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2022, 11:44 amI guess one source of optimism should come from the knowledge that the Padres could field 5 All-Star level position players (current and past) and all are (should be) at their prime. Not unreasonable to think more offense is the the tank for the rest of the season.
- Machado (29): 2022 - 2021 - 2018 - 2016 - 2015 - 2013
- Soto (23): 2022 - 2021
- Cronenworth (28): 2022 - 2021
- Bell (29): 2019
- Myers (31): 2016
Yes, can debate the criteria of getting (or not getting) an All-Star berth ... but if nothing else it takes some talent to get into that consideration.
Hard to explain the mutual lack of production but this is baseball and just as quickly the entire group can make a turnaround and produce a big offense. At least we can hope based on proven talent.

I hope over the last month of the season this proves to be true.
Because of all the Playoff bound teams at this point I would think our opponents would prefer us over the other options other than maybe the Phils..and they're about to get Harper back.
I would agree with you if we could start consistently scoring more than 3 runs a game.....we haven't even done it against Starters with 5+ era's.....not counting on it against the best Starters in the league.
Again...unless we start to come together like these guys should be hitting.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2022, 1:46 pmA study in perception vs reality while not seeing the full environment … consider the last 30 days where we have seen the Padres struggle and offense seems to be in hibernation.
Padres rank in MLB:
#8 in wRC+
#6 in runs scored
#4 in OBP
#1 in BB%
That is surprisingly good for a team we see as having no offense (think about the other teams)
What seems to be dragging the down (besides the game to game inconsistency)
#13 in SLG (still much higher than thought)
#17 in BA
So, what we have is a team that works the count, takes a walk, gets on base … just can’t hit to drive them in consistently. Back to an earlier post … maybe the effort to be selective and take the walk (good for some of the line-up) actually gets in way when they come up in the clutch? I guess it is possible that players just cannot alter approaches consistently from AB to AB when a big part of AB is instinctive / reactionary vs ML pitchers.
Then again … the rest of MLB is not exciting either … so everything is relative.
