2022 Season

Since Gamel can play LF/RF/1B and DH … expanded versatility over Voit opening up the DH slot for “resting” players during the hot summer / long consecutive game runs.

Gamel could DH (If Cano’s hitting does not start joy) … when Tatis returns, Kim could get some run at DH/INF sub allowing the INF get DH days. Gamel opens up some DH time for Profar and Myers.

Also, given the thin OF … Gamel would be better insurance against injury to Profar / Myers than anyone in AAA.

Givne his defensive flexibility and his nominal payroll increase, I think he would be the better option over Benintendi, despite the good season Benintendi is having.

IF the Padres remain as a team with one of the best records in MLB as the trade deadline approaches … wonder if Preller would avoid any “blockbuster” utilizing any of the key members of the 26 man roster? As it stands, Padres are well ahead in the playoff hunt (about 8 games ahead of the first out).

As many have said … don’t want a repeat of a depleted pitching staff due to injuries that pop up in SEPT (that “never have enough pitching” mantra) plus … and this could be a real issue … don’t want to upset the rest of the team if they move a teammate they like and who has contributed for an “outsider”. If they make a move … the return piece better be a slam dunk success.

Also, a lot depends on the health and success of Clevinger … if he is still “questionable” cannot risk moving an arm. If he is lights out (and so are the rest) … that is when becomes hard.

IF Snell or Darvish are moved it will likely be in the winter. That does set a chicken / egg scenario with re-signing Musgrove - Manaea - Clevinger - Rogers - and maybe Martinez.

Expecting a trade deadline that is not that exciting for the Padres … more the Gamel type move than a “blockbuster”.

I agree Fenn. We have plenty of Star power on this team, especially with Tatis coming back. The clubhouse chemistry seems really good, although winning always helps with clubhouse chemistry. So, maybe more of a grinder, 2nd tier type of player like a "Gamel" can slide into the clubhouse and not rearrange what's going on in there now, which is working and just add to the mix.

A JD Martinez is a big name that could rearrange things, not saying he would, just could, why risk it!

Just from an outsider perspective Grisham and Voit (no not because they are struggling just in general) strike me like mellow/serious types that don't really fit in with the club culture of bling bling. even Myers and Crone get into the knock celebration ..Grish and Voit are like the 2 that dont. I feel like Gambel fits in well and I think JD Mart brings in that Ship Vet presence (like Hos but not so far removed) and that Latin "flair" that the team would embrace...

Neither one of these guys would require a blockbuster type trade.. I could see Voit + 2 specs in the 10-20 range for JD Mart.. lets say Acosta + Max Ferguson + Voit for JD Mart type deal... Gamel would cost Mayne one of those 2 specs and a top 25-30ish one or there abouts

Also with some of these roster decisions looming I loom for AJP to make some deals with guys like Lamet/Hill/Avila... dont think Cano and/or Alcnatara have any trade value...although Cano seems to at least bring a veteran fading star loose happy mentality to the club.. (I mean our record since he came over is like 8-2.. I believe...)

Apparently bone scan on Tatis indicated he is NOT ready to swing a bat … Melvin hopes for another scan sooner than later … still may take Tatis longer to return than some hoped.

Beaty (15 day IL) will begin his rehab in EP and when the rehab ends can be optioned. However, eliminates as a 60 day IL candidate in mid-June to open a 40 man slot of Baez  et al.

Saw an analysis of what Musgrove should get as a FA after the season. Had a lot of “comparative” work to other payer deals and relative performance.

The estimate was $134MM/6 years ($22-23MM AAV). Note that they suggest there will be no “home town discount”.

That is far north of the “rumored” offer from the Padres (which I still find hard to believe … ie low). So, a lot of negotiation to come it appears.

Add on Musgrove, MLBTR has him listed as the #1 FA pitcher available after the season (#5 overall) …. If he continues to pitch as effectively as he has … the $134MM/6 years may be “conservative” for a 29 year old on the rise for the last two seasons.

Have to wonder if it would be a good trade for CHC and SD to swap Lamet and Happ. With CHC further dropping back in the standings in the NL Central, MLBTR is wondering if they will sell off some pieces.

Both Lamet and Happ are FAs after the 2023 season. Happ is making about $2.1M more than Lamet. SD could use the OF help, and Lamet could become a useful piece on their pitching staff. Or CHC could flip him for a younger piece to someone else looking for some more immediate help.

Sort of a conundrum … Lamet will have to be pitching lights out in AA to generate the trade interest but at the same time Padres need upgrade in the RP themselves.

On the other side, given the need for bats in MLB and Happ doing well would the Cubs seek to find a lower cost / longer control upside prospect(s) rather than a high risk pitcher?

Maybe a 3 team deal? Maybe part of a more complex deal? Given Lamet’s age, 2 year control, pay, and unreliability I would be fine with moving him … and suspect some RP needy contender might be willing to take the gamble.
